Brady On Makhachev's Welterweight Title Defense

Sean Brady expects Islam Makhachev to roll through Ian Garry without much resistance.

Makhachev defends his UFC welterweight title against Garry on Aug. 15 at UFC 330 in Philadelphia. Brady told Home of Fight that the Irish challenger lacks the size and power to trouble the champion, making the grappling mismatch even more lopsided.

Brady pointed to Garry's frame as deceptive. The Irishman stands tall but reportedly weighed just 180.6 pounds on fight night after rehydrating for his 2024 win over Geoff Neal, per Sherdog. That lack of bulk separates him from someone like Michael Morales, who knocked Brady out last November and carried real one-punch threat into title contention.

"Garry is tall, he's long, but he's not like a Morales, where he's like big and strong," Brady said, per Sherdog. "He's not putting guys out with one shot… So, I don't think it's gonna be too hard for Islam to really get him down… I just think it's one-way traffic for Islam. I think he's gonna get him down and sub him in."

Brady believes the absence of knockout danger gives Makhachev a clear path to takedowns and mat control. Without the power to keep the champion honest on the feet, Garry faces a long night trying to defend scrambles and escape cage positions against one of the sharpest grapplers in MMA.

UFC 330 takes place at Xfinity Mobile Arena with Makhachev carrying a 28-1 record into the bout against Garry's 17-1 mark.
