Bivol Returns From 15-Month Absence With Clinical Shutout Of Eifert
Dmitry Bivol delivered a dominant unanimous decision over mandatory challenger Michael Eifert in Ekaterinburg on Saturday to successfully defend his WBA, WBO, and IBF heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight titles.
All three judges scored it 118-107 — a shutout that reflected the one-sided nature of a performance that answered any questions about whether the layoff had taken anything from the champion.
The statement was made early. Bivol dropped Eifert with a devastating left hook midway through the first round, setting the tone for everything that followed. Eifert survived the round but spent the remainder of the contest fighting from a position of permanent disadvantage against a champion who had no interest in taking unnecessary risks.
Bivol's control of distance was the defining feature of the performance. He repeatedly made Eifert miss, punished those misses with sharp counters, and used his footwork to dictate every exchange without exposing himself to anything meaningful in return. Double left hooks in the second round and a combinations in the third demonstrated that the timing and precision that carried him through the Beterbiev rematch remained fully intact.
The middle rounds continued in the same vein — measured, efficient, and entirely under Bivol's control. A body shot in the eleventh round showed the power to hurt Eifert when he chose to apply it, but the champion was comfortable enough with the margin to coast through the championship rounds rather than push for a finish that the scorecards had already rendered unnecessary.
The victory sets up what should be a significant second half of the year for Bivol. David Benavidez holds the WBC light heavyweight title he vacated following back surgery, and a unification fight between the two unbeaten — in Benavidez's case — champions at 175 pounds is one of boxing's more compelling matchups available.
