Benouaich On Growing Up Fighting Brothers Before TUF 34

TUF 34 strawweight Delphine Benouaich credits childhood brawls with three brothers for preparing her to chase a UFC contract.

Benouaich, who recently advanced to the semifinals of the season's tournament with a quarterfinal win over Mackenzie Stiller, grew up in Évry, a Paris suburb better known for producing rappers than fighters. She told MMA Fighting that scrapping with her brothers started early. "I began MMA super late but in fact I began when I was born because I was always fighting with them," she said.

From Grappling To The Cage

The 31-year-old came to mixed martial arts through grappling, competing for the French national team before switching disciplines in her twenties. Her parents discouraged formal training when she was a teenager — "they were like, 'No, be girly. Don't do that,'" Benouaich recalled — so she waited until 20 to start grappling with a friend. A move to Évry for work as a physical education teacher brought her to a boxing gym, and MMA followed. She spent three years as an amateur, fighting for Cage Warriors Academy and the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation before turning pro in 2024.

Her coach pushed the amateur route to build experience against varied opponents. Benouaich told MMA Fighting the strategy paid off when she got rocked in one fight but recovered. "It's very interesting to discover it when you're an amateur, because in professional, if you don't react like that, it can cost you the fight," she said. She entered TUF 34 with a 7-2 pro record, her most recent win a first-round submission over Lindsey Payne at Ares FC in December.

Benouaich now sits two wins from a UFC contract. She admitted she avoided the cameras on the show but picked up some English slang along the way, telling MMA Fighting her favorite phrase was "say less."
