Benavidez Stops Ramirez To Become A Three-Division Champ

David Benavidez is a three-division world champion after he knocked out Gilberto Ramirez in the sixth round, adding the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles.

In doing so, he became the first boxer in history to hold world titles at 168, 175, and 200 pounds. Benavidez set the tempo immediately, consistently beating Ramirez to the punch and forcing the Mexican champion backwards. By the second and third rounds, he had identified the chin as the primary target and began working to it with calculated aggression.

The decisive blow of the fourth round came in the closing seconds. Benavidez landed a right hand that pinned Ramirez against the ropes before following with a combination that put him on the canvas. Ramirez came out for the fifth with his right eye already beginning to swell. He was taking shots he could not return, his timing disrupted and his movement limited.

Benavidez’s Power

When the sixth round arrived, the swelling had worsened to the point where Ramirez’s vision on that side was effectively gone. Benavidez cornered him, unloaded heavy combinations, and Ramirez took a knee. The referee then waved it off. In the ring afterwards, Benavidez made his position clear. He called out Canelo Alvarez.
