Aspinall Vacates Title After Eye Injury Drama
Tom Aspinall has vacated the UFC heavyweight title following complications from an eye injury sustained in his bout against Ciryl Gane, who has been elevated to undisputed champion.
The situation has drawn harsh criticism from observers, as MMA Mania's mailbag panel unanimously rated the circumstances between an eight and a 10 on a "how messed up" scale. Jesse Holland called it "embarrassing for UFC and a really bad look for Gane," noting the heavyweight division never recovered from Francis Ngannou's departure and has suffered through repeated delays involving Jon Jones.
Referee Accountability And The Eye Poke Problem
Tim Edwards of MMA Mania pointed to wider issues with foul enforcement, arguing that referees should deduct points on the first infraction rather than issuing warnings. He suggested that stricter officiating would reduce incidents like groin shots, eye pokes, and fence grabs that have marred major fights over the past two years. Edwards wrote that he is "not that mad at Gane and him being the champ" but frustrated that lax refereeing created the situation in the first place.
Thomas Myers noted the once-promising career of Aspinall has been "completely derailed" during his fighting prime, in a division that desperately needs star power. Aspinall has since ended his podcast and quit social media in the wake of the title drama.
Alexander Volkov emerged as the consensus pick for Gane's first defence, with multiple panelists citing the widely criticized decision Volkov suffered against Gane at UFC 310. However, Alex Pereira's vocal complaints about the eye poke and his pursuit of triple-champion status could see UFC book that rematch instead. Josh Hokit remains in the mix after recent momentum at heavyweight.
