Mayer And Ryan Face Off For The First Time – ‘She Loves To Talk’

Mikaela Mayer and Sandy Ryan faced off against each other for the first time during the fight week before they box on Saturday.

Mayer defends her WBO Welterweight Title, having beaten Ryan in the previous fight to claim the belt. It was a close majority decision, but Mayer did enough to sway the judges. The build-up produced lots of controversy after Ryan was hit with paint as she exited her hotel room on her way to the fight venue. Ryan suggested that someone from Mayer’s team may have been responsible.

Mayer rejected that claim, as she knows another win sets up an Undisputed Welterweight clash with Lauren Price. Ryan is training with Mayer’s ex-coach, Kay Koroma, adding another element of intrigue to the fight. She had beaten Terri Harper to claim the WBO belt, but unfortunately she fell short in her first title defense.

Ryan only has two losses in her career, but she is facing someone who is seen as the favorite. The victor will be well placed to face Lauren Price. Price holds the WBA, IBF and WBC belts. Price defeated Natasha Jonas in her last fight to unify at 147. Mayer or Ryan will be positioned to fight for the Undisputed Welterweight Title, going down in history if they were to come out victorious. But in order to do so, they would have to come out victorious against an undefeated fighter. Mayer and Ryan had plenty to say after they sized each other up.

Trash Talk

“She thinks she’s so tricky. We know that’s how she is. We know she’s going to say that because she doesn’t like to engage anyway, and neither does her coach. Her coach wants to hide and stay in the shadows, and he’s probably telling her, ‘Don’t engage. I’m just doing what I have to do. I don’t do anything but speak the facts, and I’m doing my part to sell this fight. Everyone is coming together and working hard to give her the rematch that she wanted. The least she can do is show up and help the promotion of this fight,” Mayer

“You can see she loves the attention, the talk. When you don’t give her that, it triggers her. So, she’s saying, ‘Oh, she’s scared.’ I’m not scared. We just did a faceoff. This is for the media. This is what’s in the contract, and we’re here. She loves to talk and loves the media. When you don’t give her that, it makes her talk all kinds of nonsense,” Ryan
