Malignaggi Outlines Charlo’s Key To Beating Canelo, McGregor Trolls Malignaggi And More

Paulie Malignaggi has given his take on what Jermell Charlo needs to do in order to overcome Canelo Alvarez.

Charlo will face the biggest fight of his career, as he moves up two weight classes to fight for all of Alvarez’s belts at 168. A victory would make him an undisputed champion in a second weight class following his accomplishments at 154.

Although Charlo is the bigger man, the extra weight will no doubt impact the fight. There are questions over whether it will slow Charlo down, as well as whether he can handle the firepower that will come his way.

So in order to get a win, Malignaggi felt it was vital that the fighter adopted a balance between attack and defence in order to keep Canelo at bay. After all, the latter will aim to close the distance and attack Charlo to the body.

Malignaggi On Charlo

“It’s a very, very big opportunity, but jumping up two weight classes is very difficult all at once. Also, Jermell has a habit a little bit of kind of getting wild with his combinations.

“He’ll close the gap very smoothly, but then he’ll kind of overextend his combinations and get a little wild. It’s not realistic to assume that Jermell to fight in a careful, calculated way because he never has before. We saw it in the Castano fight, and he was getting himself caught. Tony Harrison was able to take advantage of it in spots with little potshots in between. Really, that’s kind of dangerous if you fall into that habit against Canelo Alvarez.

“That’s where Jermell has to fight a disciplined fight, but I think Canelo has the advantage both for that reason, and I haven’t seen Jermell fight in this kind of disciplined manner yet at this level,” Malignaggi said

Malignaggi Vs. McGregor

Meanwhile, Malignaggi was subjected to ridicule from MMA star Conor McGregor during a social media post that was then deleted.

The pair do have history given that Malignaggi was brought into McGregor’s camp as a sparring partner to face Floyd Mayweather Jr.

However, things took a turn for the worse as Malignaggi left the camp. This was followed by accusations by both fighters that the respective boxers had taken a bad beating in sparring. So much so that a clip of the sparring between the two was released by McGregor.

But given that it was not the full sparring video, that did raise a lot of outrage from Malignaggi who demanded that the public see the full tape and get the correct narrative. But as that never happened, it left a bad taste in the mouth.

“It’s one thing to talk about what happened in sparring. It’s another thing to lie about what happened in sparring. Neither of those things is actually supposed to happen. I should have already known it was coming. I gave Conor the benefit of the doubt. I thought he would have a little bit of code and some ethics. But the guy’s got no morals, he’s got no ethics. He’s a scumbag who thinks he’s above everything and everybody. None of the rules apply to him,” Malignaggi

Hearn On Malignaggi-McGregor

So in order to rouse up some controversy, McGregor posted a picture of Malignaggi. It showed him standing in front of an advertisement of his beer ‘ForgedStout,’ with the following comments: “Goes down lovely! @ForgedStout.”

This naturally begs the question: Would McGregor ever face Malignaggi in a boxing bout? Well, the demand for it would certainly be there, given the history between the two.

And since promoters have shown an interest in putting on the fight, they would have some major backing in the process. Eddie Hearn has previously spoken about his desire to hold such a fight.

Although the chances of it happening are slim due to the inactivity of both men, Hearn’s previous comments were telling.

“I said to him [Malignaggi] this morning, I would love to do it. DAZN – oh they would pay a lot of money for that fight. I said to Conor McGregor’s guys I would float the numbers to them and see what they think. Listen I think, as I said to Conor McGregor’s guys, maybe he can beat Paulie Malignaggi,” Hearn
