Lopez Will Likely Rematch Kambosos Jr. – Says Lou DiBella

Teofimo Lopez will most likely face George Kambosos Jr. in a rematch.

That is according to promoter Lou DiBella. The lightweights faced off in a thrilling fight in 2021 when Kambosos shocked the world to beat the unified lightweight champion in a split-decision victory.

The post-fight comments were also controversial with Teo disputing the decision.

Lopez Will Likely Rematch Kambosos Jr.

“Helluva fighter, but I won tonight man. Everybody knows that. The referee raised my hand. I won tonight. I don’t care what anybody says, yo. I won tonight. At the end of the day I’ve been here, I’ve done that. I want to thank God. I want to thank everybody that came out tonight. Look. I ain’t no sore loser,” Lopez said

Lopez’s Comeback

In the aftermath, however, Kambosos lost to Devin Haney in back-to-back fights in Australia.

In contrast, Lopez created history by becoming a two-division and two-time lineal champion with a win over Josh Taylor

But given that both fighters are promoted by Top Rank, DiBella sees a rematch happening even with Lopez’s move to 140.

“One way or the other, at some point in the future I believe that fight’s gonna happen again. You know that. Assuming Teofimo doesn’t retire another two or three times, it’ll happen.

“But look, Teofimo is gonna be one of those guys that’s gonna have a tumultuous, fascinating and fun career. And I think for George, Teofimo is always gonna be a fight that’s there. That fight was too much fun the first time for it not to happen again.

“I think [the rematch is] a natural fight at some point,” DiBella

Kambosos’ Next Fight

But before that can happen, Kambosos and Lopez will have to keep on winning. The Australian faces Maxi Hughes on July 22nd, 2023 in an IBF lightweight title eliminator.

Meanwhile, Lopez will plan his next move after Taylor following his decision to come out of retirement and not vacate the belt. With that being said, a fight could happen later down the line at some point.
