Loma And Kambosos In Talks For A Fight In April

Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr. are close to signing an agreement for a fight.

That is according to the Australian outlet, ‘The Australian.’ Reports stress that an agreement could be made for a fight in Perth, Sydney, Adelaide, or Melbourne. As of now, a date will not be confirmed until after Devin Haney takes on Regis Prograis on December 9th, 2023. The Ukrainian has not fought since his controversial loss to Haney. The three-division champion lost via a unanimous decision, despite the majority of the boxing community feeling that the Ukrainian had won.

Thereafter, Bob Arum confirmed that Loma would not be fighting in 2023. This ruled out a fight with Shakur Stevenson. The Ukrainian was the highest-ranked fighter in line to face Stevenson for the-then vacant WBC title. But since Loma ruled out fighting in 2023, as per his promoter Bob Arum, Stevenson faced Edwin De Los Santos and won the title.

Arum On Loma

“We tried to make the fight between Shakur and Loma. And Egis told us that Loma has decided that he’s not fighting again this year. So, the fact that they’re talking about a fight with Loma and Kambosos is nonsense. Egis would not mislead us, and he told us that Loma wants to take the rest of the year off,” Arum stated

At the same time, following Haney’s move up to 140, there is an expectation that he will vacate his IBF title at 135. That could then lead to Kambosos and Loma fighting for the title. After all, Kambosos has spoken about his desire to face the Ukrainian in the past.

“Don’t worry about me. I’ve had all the belts at lightweight. We got a big stadium fight coming. We’ll fight Lomachenko next. That’s the fight. He’s more open to throw his shots and engage. I want to engage, and that’s a big fight that I get up for,” Kambosos Jr. said

Loma’s Plans

If a fight between Kambosos and Lomachenko does not get made, there is a chance that the Ukrainian could face Stevenson. Now that the latter has a belt at 135 pounds, there is a higher chance of Loma facing the American. This was after Lomachenko’s camp had stated that the fighter’s aim was to target a world title moving forward. That was the view of Loma’s manager, Egis Klimas

“We should expect him to be back some time next year. After that not a loss – but a “loss” – he just said he’s not gonna do anything until the end of the year. He’s taking it easy, doing whatever he does at home, and next year we’re gonna come and start looking into the fights. We’re not gonna fight just any fight, he wants to fight for a world title. 135, yes,” Klimas stated

Given that Lomachenko is 35, the chances of securing the big flights are diminishing. But a win over Kambosos could increase the chances of getting those bouts. ‘Find all the latest boxing news and MMA breaking updates on boxingnews.com
