Kambosos Seeking Big Fights At 140

George Kambosos Jr. is looking to return to winning ways by boxing at 140.
Kambosos has achieved the pinnacle of the sport, having become a unified champion at 135 pounds. Kambosos defeated Teofimo Lopez to go down in history by securing one of the biggest upsets. But that success was short-lived. He failed to beat Devin in his next fight, as he never became undisputed. He had the chance to do it again. But Haney beat him in the rematch to retain his titles. Kambosos never looked like the same fighter.
His next win against Maxi Hughes via a majority decision which was controversial. Most of the boxing community felt Hughes should have been given the win. Kambosos had the chance to win another world title against Vasiliy Lomachenko in his last fight. But he was stopped as Loma got the IBF Lightweight Title. Kambosos has moved on by signing with Matchroom Boxing, as he looked ahead to the future.
Kambosos’ Aim
“I’ve got a great relationship with Matchroom Boxing, Eddie Hearn, DAZN. I won my championship with him, I won my world title eliminator on a Matchroom show. So for me, I feel very comfortable, comfortable with the promotional team, the broadcaster, and every part that goes along with who I’m signed with now. It’s going to be exciting. Obviously there’s a date — we’ll say March now.
“I’m not going to give the exact date — but March and it’s looking like Sydney. I haven’t fought in Sydney for eight years…So I’m excited, 140-pound debut. The guy that’s going to be announced is a former world champion, has a whole country behind him and a hell of a record, and a good solid test to make my 140-pound debut, get rated nicely, and go on to a championship fight. We all know who the next guy is but we’re very focused on the March fight,” Kambosos said
What’s Next?
The new promotional deal will see him fight at junior welterweight. He could target the Lopez fight. Lopez has the WBO Junior Welterweight Title, meaning there is a narrative in place to run things back. Lopez was adamant that he had won the fight. There were talks over a rematch, but it never happened. Lopez may well take that fight to avenge his only loss.
There is also a possibility of facing his fellow Australian, Liam Paro. The latter has just lost his IBF Junior Welterweight Title against Richardson Hitchins. But that fight is still big since it would sell out in Australia. Kambosos could also target a world title fight with Hitchins. He hit out at Hitchins, stating that he is ready to face him. He also talked down his win over Paro, as he was focused on making that fight.
“Yes, yes. I’ve said a million times — he keeps saying ‘you’re not signing a contract.’ What contract, buddy? You want me. You’re a champion but you haven’t made no money. You’re a bum. You haven’t done anything in the sport except win your last fight and win a world title,” Kambosos added
