In today’s boxing news, Joe Cordina secured a majority-decision win over Edward Vazquez to his retain IBF super-featherweight title, but the champion had to overcome a tough fight to do so.

Cordina was making the first defense of his title as a win would have secured potential unification fights against Emanuel Navarette or O’Shaquie Foster moving forward.

Cordina Impressess

The champion made a positive start by connecting with hooks to the body of Vazquez. That also included a right-hand over the top, with Cordina showing his boxing skills.

But the challenger hit back in the next by connecting with a right-hand uppercut and a left hook. At the midway point of the fight, Vazquez grew into the fight.

Cordina responded with a strong seventh round, only for Vazquez to attack Cordina’s body with left hooks in the tenth. As the fight went to the scorecards, the judges had it in favor of Cordina: 116-112, 116-112 and 114-114.

With that being said, here was the post-fight reaction following the close bout.

Reaction

“He’s tricky and he’s clever. I had to track him down and work him out. Going into the 10th, my trainer told me it was level. I didn’t box to my best, but I still think I did enough to win. There are no marks on my face, but there are marks on his. I didn’t perform to my best, and he couldn’t beat me on my worst night, and he’s a sore loser,” Cordina

“I will be back. Everyone watching around the world knows I won. [Matchroom promoter] Eddie Hearn knows I won. He wasn’t able to do what he wanted to, he had no power, he couldn’t land his right hand or left hook, and all the others at 130 pounds will walk through him,” Vazquez

“Listen, Vazquez will very hard done by it. He had a very close fight with Raymond Ford and had a close fight with Joe Cordina. That’s two decisions that possibly could have done his way, but tonight, I felt that Joe edged the fight as the champion defending. I think you’re going to see the best out of him in those big challenges.

“No disrespect to Vazquez, but the likes of Leigh Wood, the likes of O’Shaquie Foster, but you have to be better in those fights. Sometimes you come off the back of two fantastic performances [by Cordina] against [Kenichi] Ogawa & [Shavkat] Rakhimov. I still thought it was a good performance [by Cordina].

“Vazquez was very good, and we knew that coming into this fight. “Now, I think it’s time to test himself at this stage of his career and take those big moments. Brilliant fight, and brilliant moment, and a real close one tonight. I believe every champion should try and unify the division, and I think Joe Cordina is no different. I believe he can beat everybody,” Eddie Hearn

Ultimately, Cordina got the win which was the aim prior to the fight. But moving forward, the champion will have to put in better performances.
