Jermell Charlo Was Arrested For Assaulting A Family Member

Jermell Charlo, the former undisputed junior middleweight champion, was detained on the grounds of a misdemeanor assault.

BoxingScene.com states the arrest took place on December 16, 2023. The authorities took him to Fort Bend County jail. It is alleged he assaulted a member of his family. Chyane Westbrook (his wife) issued a restraining order against him. A divorce also accompanied this. It is still unclear who the victim was, but Charlo’s personal life is not in the best position. 

Charlo’s career in the boxing ring has also suffered. The American was dominated in his fight against Canelo Alvarez after he jumped up two weight classes to fight for undisputed at 168. The weight disparity showed in the fight as Charlo’s punches failed to earn Canelo’s respect.

So much so that the Mexican dropped him in round seven. Charlo went into survival mode to box on the outside as he made it to the final bell. But his prospects at 154 also suffered with that fight. His WBO 154-pound title was stripped, and Tim Tszyu became the full champion. 

Charlo’s Prior Arrest

This is not the first time that Charlo has been arrested. In 2018, the boxer was arrested for reportedly strangling his then girlfriend, Jazmyne Olison. He was arrested on May 18, 2022 and then taken to Dallas County Jail. Although that may have been the case, Charlo denied doing anything. In response, Olison filed a civil protection order in June. 

“[Charlo] committed the said offense by intentionally, knowingly, and recklessly impeding [Olison’s] normal breathing and circulation of blood by applying pressure to [her] throat and neck and by blocking [her] nose and mouth.

Jermell is not guilty and is looking forward to his day in court. The evidence in this case is clear and conclusive and does not support these allegations,” Charlo’s attorney Mike Howard 

The news is the last thing that the Charlo family needs. Jermell’s brother, Jermall Charlo, recently returned to the ring after overcoming serious mental issues. He beat Jose Benavidez Jr. in a dominant performance as he targeted bigger fights. But the relationship between the two brothers has not been on good terms. Despite his desire to be so, Jermall admitted that he is not on speaking terms after the Benavidez win with Jermell.
