Hearn: Haney Demanded Big Money for Comeback Fight

Eddie Hearn says Devin Haney wanted big money for his comeback fight.
Haney confirmed his return for March 25, with Adrien Broner being the leading candidate for that fight. Haney earned $35 million for his last fight against Ryan Garcia, which became a no-contest. Devin lost the fight, but the result was overturned after Ryan failed VADA tests for Ostarine. Haney’s brand suffered significant damage. He vacated his WBC Junior Welterweight Title after only Top Rank made a purse bid for his mandatory Sandor Martin. Liam Paro also accused Haney of pricing himself out of a fight.
Meanwhile, Teofimo Lopez alleged he sent Haney an offer, which did not go anywhere. Terence Crawford reportedly got $10 million for fighting on BLK Prime against David Avanesyan. It was a big payday for a fight that not a lot of people wanted to see. Haney may have secured a good offer, so he will not be fighting on DAZN next. Hearn had this to say about Haney’s next fight.
Hearn Reacts
“Devin needs to have a comeback fight, really. For the amount of money he wants to have a comeback fight, that’s not easy. ‘Cause, generally, a comeback fight isn’t a great fight. At the same time, who’s going to pay for it? If you can find someone to pay great money for a comeback fight, maybe that’s BLK Prime. I don’t even know if there’s any truth to it, but it’d be good to see him back, ‘cause I do think he needs to get himself back in the ring,” Hearn said
Haney’s problem is that he will have to take more risks if he wants big purses. The Garcia rematch is the main target. The fight is even bigger now, given the narrative from the first fight. Garcia’s team argued that the amount of Ostarine in his system was insufficient to enhance performance. They also stressed that Garcia’s left hook simply exposed Haney’s defense. Devin’s game plan also failed to provide any adjustments, as he hit the canvas three times.
Haney’s Issue
But Haney’s team stressed that they would win if things were on an even playing field. Haney’s camp also demanded mandatory VADA testing for any rematch, while they may also want more concessions. Garcia came in over the 140-pound limit the last time around. While Ryan paid the fine, the weight made a difference since Ryan could push through with his punches. Hearn felt the Garcia rematch would allow Haney to command big paydays.
“Devin’s been very well paid. A lot of that is down to me. But the problem is this interim fight. Him against Ryan Garcia does massive numbers – but that interim fight, he’s not one of them guys that’s gonna take half a million or a million to have an easy 10-rounder. He still wants to get paid very well. I think a lot of people are going to be interested to see Devin Haney fight again, because they’re probably not sure how he’s going to come back,” Hearn added
