Biography

Early Life and Amateur Career

David Avanesyan, born on August 15, 1988, in Pyatigorsk, Russia, entered the world of boxing at a young age. Growing up in a city known for its sports culture, Avanesyan was drawn to boxing as a means of discipline and expression. His early exposure to the sport ignited a passion that would shape his future career. From a modest beginning, training in local gyms and learning the fundamentals of the sport, Avanesyan’s dedication quickly became apparent.

In his amateur career, Avanesyan distinguished himself through a combination of skill, determination, and an intense work ethic. He amassed an impressive record, participating in numerous national and international tournaments that honed his abilities and tested his resolve against a diverse array of opponents. This period was crucial for developing the resilience and tactical prowess that would later define his professional career.

One of the significant milestones in Avanesyan’s amateur career came when he represented Russia in various European tournaments. His performances on this stage were marked by strategic fighting and technical skill, traits that earned him accolades and recognition among his peers and coaches. Though specific dates and opponents from his amateur days are less documented, his achievements during this time laid a solid foundation for his transition to professional boxing.

Professional Career

David Avanesyan embarked on his professional boxing career on June 12, 2009, with a unanimous decision win against Vazgen Agadzhanyan. Shortly after, he experienced his first setback in a match against Andrey Klimov on July 11, losing by unanimous decision. Avanesyan then went on to claim twelve consecutive victories over the next four years, capturing the Russian welterweight title along with two WBC regional titles. His winning streak was momentarily halted with a split draw against Aslanbek Kozaev on March 16, 2013.

The following years marked significant achievements for Avanesyan. He clinched the vacant WBA interim welterweight title on November 7, 2015, defeating Charlie Navarro by a ninth-round stoppage. His profile rose significantly after a victorious bout against former world champion Shane Mosley on May 28, 2016, where he defended his title and made his debut in the United States. Later, due to stalled negotiations for a mandated fight against Keith Thurman, the WBA elevated Avanesyan to Regular champion status in July 2016, while Thurman was named Super champion.

Avanesyan’s defense of the WBA (Regular) welterweight title took place on February 18, 2017, against former light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson. The bout was held at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was part of an undercard broadcast on Showtime. Despite a competitive showing, Avanesyan lost by a close unanimous decision, with scores of 116–112 on two cards and 115–113 on the third.

Avanesyan continued to compete at a high level, defeating Josh Kelly by sixth-round TKO on February 20, 2021. He followed this with a victory over Liam Taylor via a second-round TKO. Pushing forward in his career, Avanesyan faced a series of bouts that reinforced his position in the welterweight division. Following a win against Oskari Metz in March of 2022, Avanesyan lost via knockout to Terence Crawford in a match for the WBO welterweight title.
