Has Tim Tszyu Been Exposed?

Eddie Hearn has doubts over Tim Tszyu’s ability as an elite boxer.

Tsyzu is going through the worst form of his career. He failed to win a fight in 2024, coming up short twice. He lost the first fight of his career when he faced Sebastian Fundora in a defense of his WBO belt. The vacant WBC belt was also on the line. He suffered a big cut over his hairline following an accidental clash with Fundora’s elbow. But his corner failed to stop the bout, as they lost a split decision on the card.

But Tszyu admitted his vision was compromised, showing it was the wrong decision. The Australian then jumped back in the ring around six months later. He faced the undefeated Russian Bakhram Murtazaliev. Bakhram had the IBF Junior Middleweight Title, giving Tszyu a chance to become a two-time world champion. But Tszyu was dropped four times on his way to a loss. Hearn has now reacted to Tszyu’s form, doubting his level as a top fighter.

Hearn Reacts

“I think the unknown about Tim Tszyu is, is he really elite level. He’s a world-class fighter; there’s no doubt about it. But is he really at that level? Maybe. I think the jury is out. There’s no shame in that. Sometimes, you step up to that level, and you’re not good enough. If I was his promoter, I’d probably fight him over here [Australia], and get him a confidence win against a top 15 guy, and then I’d go back to America. One thing you know. He’s must-watch TV, Tim Tszyu. He’s not going to struggle to get opportunities because people think they can beat him, and he’s great to watch,” Hearn said

Tsyzu’s father, Kostya Tszyu, also spoke about his son’s form. There is a perception that Tim’s preparation may not be on point. Kostya reacted by inviting Tim to train with him in Russia. But there are doubts over whether that will make any difference. Tszyu’s next opponent is also crucial. He has faced two world-level opponents back-to-back outside of Australia. He could fight in his backyard to gain some confidence.

What’s Next?

But such a fight is unlikely to do any big numbers. It will also be difficult to get a credible name to travel to Australia without a title. George Kambosos Jr. managed to get Devin Haney to Australia twice, given there were titles on the line. Hearn recognized there is a big difference in fighting in Australia and outside of it. Tszyu will have to rack up a few wins before he puts himself back in the conversation for the biggest fights.

“Sometimes, you can get carried away. There’s a massive difference between fighting in Australia and the Australian market and then going out on the world stage and taking on elite opposition. You saw that against [Sebastian] Fundora, and he [Tszyu] was very unlucky in that fight with the injury and everything,” Hearn stated
