Garcia Will Only Rematch Tank At 147 – ‘He Knows Where The Money Is At’

Ryan Garcia says he will only fight Gervonta Davis at welterweight.
Garcia has already fought Tank at lightweight. He agreed to a 136-pound catchweight with a 10-pound rehydration clause. He came up short in the fight, being stopped in the seventh round by a body shot. In his post-fight reaction, Garcia revealed that the weight conditions had drained him, so he could not perform his best.
There were also suggestions that he was coming into the fight with an injury during camp. Ryan eventually moved up to junior welterweight as he defeated Oscar Duarte and Devin Haney. The Haney fight was turned into a no-contest after he failed VADA tests for Ostarine. However, Ryan also failed to make 140 pounds for the Haney weight, as he now faces Rolando Romero at 147.
Ryan has now confirmed that any Davis rematch would have to be at 147 since he cannot make 140. That makes a rematch unlikely since Tank’s highest weight class has been at 140 when he defeated Mario Barrios. Davis also tends to implement rehydration clauses when he faces much bigger fighters. Garcia will not want to do that, having already done so in the first fight. Ryan has also shown that he can generate huge sums without Tank, which gives him more leverage.
Garcia On Tank
Davis has also been criticized following his last fight when he secured a majority draw against Lamont Roach. Most of the boxing community felt he should have come out with a loss after the referee failed to count a knockdown in the ninth round. Ryan has said there is plenty of money available in the fight, which could sway Tank. Tank did say that he wants to leave this year with a view to boxing three more times. Following the Roach fight, that has now potentially been extended, as he did name Ryan previously as one of the names he wanted before leaving the sport. That has left the ball in Tank’s court about whether he wants to take this.
Akin: “How does the Tank fight happen again? You’re at 147 lbs. You’re obviously a big guy. Do you make 140 again, because I don’t think Tank goes up to 147.”
Ryan Garcia: “I don’t make 140 again. I can’t. Even being near these guys, Rolly. He just seems smaller than me. Even Teofimo, I’m not to him. They just seem smaller than me. They used to seem bigger than me. ‘They’re pretty big,’ but now I’m like, ‘Damn, this dude. I’m going to have my way in there.’”
Akin: “This fight might never happen. You might not ever get your lick back with Tank.”
Ryan: “Tank knows we made good money. He knows that’s where the big money is at.”
Akin: “Is that the most important fight to you, avenging that loss?”
Ryan: “Yeah, I feel like that wasn’t even close to what I can do at all.”
