Fury Vs Usyk Will Happen On December 23rd – Says Spencer Browne

In today’s boxing news, Spencer Browne, who happens to be Tyson Fury’s representative, has confirmed that the undisputed heavyweight championship will occur on December 23rd, 2023.

According to reports, Usyk had suggested that a bout was unlikely to occur in 2023 after the Ukrainian admitted that he required a 14-week camp. The timeline would, therefore, have put the fight date in 2024.

Much in the same way, the turnaround time for a fight in 2023 appeared short, given that Fury is preparing to face Francis Ngannou on October 28th, 2023.

Therefore, provided that the boxer would then take some time off, an undisputed fight straight after appeared unlikely. And yet, Brown has stated otherwise.

Fury-Usyk Date

“I can assure you that’s not the case [Oleksandr Usyk not being available for December 23rd due to him needing a 14-week camp]. I can categorically tell you that we’re going on the 23rd. So, we’re not bothered about anybody else, really. Why would we be? I spoke to his management last night about the situation, and so did Frank & George Warren. We’ve had lengthy conversations. That’s not the case, and we’re full steam ahead for the 23rd [of December]. That’s a great fight, and it’s a good warmup fight,” Browne

Nevertheless, neither fighter has made an official statement regarding the bout. As such, until that is the case, there are plenty of hurdles in the meantime that would have to be navigated.

There is no guarantee that Fury would come out unscathed against Ngannou without an injury. In addition, there is the outside chance that the former UFC heavyweight champion could pull off an upset.

And if that were the case, there would likely be a rematch. Regardless of what the case may be, Spencer talked up what is one of the biggest bouts out there.

Fury-Usyk Importance

“We’re looking at a generational fight [Fury-Usyk] here, a fight that hasn’t happened in 20 years, and it’s not going to happen again in properly another 20 years if it happens at all again. It’s so difficult for this to happen. It’s a minefield. You need certain ingredients to bake the cake here,” Browne

Those comments were also backed up, given the circumstances that played out to make the fight. After the initial talks for a fight in April at Wembley broke down, there were question marks over whether it would get made.

Despite Usyk accepting a 70-30 split, the deal could not get over the line. Disputes over the rematch clause could not get resolved. But this time around, it seems that both fighters spoke personally on the phone to finalize the deal.

“Tyson and Usyk actually spoke to each other, Tyson invited him after the fight to go to Morecambe with his kids to have a weekend away. Honestly it was very easy, it got done very simply and this is where we are today. It was very quick and very simple. Tyson just said, ‘Thanks very much, look forward to meeting you in the ring. And after it all settles, I’d like you to come to Morecambe where I live, bring your kids and we’ll have a weekend,” Brown
