Fury Tells Wilder To Retire - 'He’s A Shadow Of His Former Glory'

Tyson Fury wants to see Deontay Wilder retire from the sport of boxing.

Fury shared three memorable fights with Wilder as he secured two wins and a draw in one of the most thrilling trilogies of all time. Fury had to get off the canvas in the first and third fight. He would eventually stop Wilder in their second and third bouts. The Gypsy King admitted that he was afraid he may have suffered brain damage following the three fights, given the amount of punishment he took.

Meanwhile, Wilder made an accusation against Fury with suggestions that The Gypsy King had put an egg-shaped object in his gloves. Those claims were not proven, as boxing fans ultimately remembered how Fury managed to weaken Wilder, who is no longer the same fighter. Under his current trainer, Malik Scott, Wilder has only secured one victory out of his last four bouts.

Wilder’s Form

That was a first-round stoppage win against Robert Helenius. The Bronze Bomber is on a two-fight losing streak, coming up short against Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang. The Zhang defeat was difficult to take since the Chinese heavyweight had stopped him in the fifth round. Wilder was meant to have a fight in April against Curtis Harper. However, that fight is no longer going ahead, raising question marks over his next steps.

Reports have linked Wilder with a fight against Francis Ngannou. The former UFC Heavyweight Champion has had two boxing fights against Fury and Anthony Joshua. Ngannou was linked with the Wilder fight before he faced Fury, meaning there is a narrative to make that fight.

It also offers the opportunity for both to secure a big payday, which could see Wilder leave the sport. However, boxing is a sport where one punch can change a whole career. Wilder is also at the latter stage of his career, having earned enough money to secure his financial future.

Fury On Wilder

He ultimately entered the sport to earn money for his daughter, who suffers from Spina Bifida. Wilder has managed to do that, as a world title shot is unlikely moving forward. Although he could secure a fight with Joshua, it is not as big as what it could have been. Fury recently announced his retirement after the second defeat to Oleksandr Usyk. The Gypsy King was hoping that Wilder would do the same.

“Being truthful, I’d like to see poor old Deontay retire from boxing. Obviously he lost the three fights to me. We took a lot of years off of each other’s lives. That war that ended in the 11th round by knockout, that takes a lot out your tank and you don’t recover from fights like that. Between me and Wilder in our trilogy there were ten knockdowns.

“It takes a lot out of a fighter. Even when he’s come back and had a couple of fights since against Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang, he’s only a shadow of his former glory. The only thing left of Deontay is his name. And that’s it. So I’d like to see him retire for sure before he does damage to himself” Wilder said
