Professional Career

Beginning his professional journey on June 19, 2015, Kurbanov made a striking debut by achieving a second-round TKO against Charlan Takam in Yekaterinburg, Russia. This victory set the tone for his aggressive and powerful fighting style. Kurbanov rapidly ascended the ranks, amassing an undefeated streak that showcased his skill and determination. Notable early victories included winning the vacant WBC Asian Boxing Council Silver light middleweight title on May 6, 2016, against Manuk Dilanyan, where he demonstrated his knockout power with a ninth-round TKO. His ability to dominate continued as he secured the WBO Youth light middleweight title on December 17, 2016, with a knockout against Szabolcs Szabo.

His consistent performance led to more significant opportunities. On September 9, 2017, Kurbanov captured the vacant WBO International light middleweight title by defeating Štěpán Horváth through a unanimous decision, highlighting his capacity to perform in longer bouts. The following year, his reputation was further solidified with wins against tough opponents like Juan Carlos Rodríguez and Nikolozi Gviniashvili, the latter ending in a retirement victory for Kurbanov. In 2021, Kurbanov continued to impress the boxing world by winning the vacant WBO International light middleweight title against Liam Smith on May 7 in a fiercely contested 12-round bout, showcasing his strategic depth and resilience. His skill in the ring was further demonstrated in a notable victory over Michel Soro on May 5, 2023, where he secured a split decision in a tightly contested fight.

However, Kurbanov faced a significant challenge on March 8, 2024, when he competed for the vacant WBA World light middleweight title against Israil Madrimov. In this high-stakes encounter, he experienced his first professional defeat via a TKO in the fifth round. This loss marked a pivotal moment in his career, testing his ability to rebound and adapt in future competitions.
