Fans Rip De La Hoya Over His Fishnet Comments
Fans have ripped Oscar De La Hoya for his response to wearing fishnets.
De La Hoya is regarded as one of the biggest boxers ever. He is a six-weight world champion and has managed to transition into a successful promoter, forming Golden Boy Promotions. He has helped build some of the biggest stars in the world, such as Canelo Alvarez and Ryan Garcia. While that may have been the case, his life outside the boxing ring has not helped. He has been vocal about his cocaine addiction in the past, and images of him infamously wearing fishnets were leaked.
Photos showing De La Hoya crossdressing were leaked to the tabloids. Oscar denied the authenticity of the pictures. However, he later stated that the photos were, in fact, real. Those pictures have forever tarnished his legacy, with Floyd Mayweather, Dana White, and even Canelo using those photos to make snide remarks against him. Oscar has caused quite a stir, saying numerous people would have done what he did during his lifetime.
De La Hoya’s Comments
That is not the only backlash De La Hoya has faced. Canelo Alvarez accused him of attempting to steal money during his time at Golden Boy. Canelo made the accusations after conducting an audit, which alleged that he was owed money. Alvarez made those claims directly at De La Hoya during the presser for his Jaime Munguia fight. Oscar and Canelo then squared up to each other, as things could have escalated. De La Hoya would later sue Canelo for defamation, showing he has plenty of critics. But that did not stop Oscar from continuing to counter the perception around him. De La Hoya attorney Ricardo Cestero had this to say:
“It’s defamatory … to accuse someone of a crime [and] to make false statements specifically designed to injure someone’s business. Canelo did both of those things [Wednesday]. He falsely accused Oscar of a crime with the specific intention of supposedly warning other boxers not to do business with Oscar or Golden Boy. Clearly, Canelo intentionally defamed Oscar and Golden Boy.Obviously, Canelo harbors great animosity and ill will toward Oscar.”
Golden Boy’s Success
Nevertheless, Golden Boy continues to go from strength to strength. The company recently signed a deal with the Saudis to develop a partnership with Riyadh Season. The Saudis held their first event featuring Vergil Ortiz vs. Serhii Bohachuk on August 10.
Ortiz secured the win in a controversial majority decision win. He survived two knockdowns as the attention turned to the future. Reports indicate the Saudis want to make an event between Ortiz and Terence Crawford next. Shakur Stevenson could also face William Zepeda on that card, showing Golden Boy’s willingness to make the biggest fights.
“We just discussed it with His Excellency, and if that’s what Vergil wants, then that’s what we’re going to get him. Everything is up in the air. Vergil is in the hospital. Bohachuk is in the hospital. Let’s respect that. Once they get better, we’ll discuss it again and make something happen.
“He’s [Ortiz] okay. They’re both okay. They’re hurt. It’s literally like the Rocky movie. Apollo Creed and Sylvester Stallone in the hospital. It was a tough fight. Let’s let them rest, and then we’ll reconvene,” De La Hoya said
