Devin Haney Wants To Become Undisputed At 140

Devin Haney plans on staying at 140 pounds following his fight with Ryan Garcia to become a two-weight undisputed champion.

The Dream became the youngest Undisputed Lightweight Champion in the four-belt era when he beat George Kambosos Jr. Haney then vacated the belts and moved up to junior welterweight. In his first fight, he beat the WBC champion Regis Prograis, winning every round to become a two-weight world champion. Now, he faces Garcia in the biggest fight of his career. The bout will likely earn him his biggest payday, as he aimed to make history at 140.

“At first, I didn’t plan to, but now. Yes, I want undisputed. They will find every reason not to. But Ryan first once I beat him. If Teo [Lopez] wants to unify, I would gladly entertain that fight if the numbers make sense,” said Haney about his desire to face WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez next if he successfully defeats Ryan Garcia in his title defense on April 20th,” Haney said

Haney’s Options

There are possible unification fights between Teofimo Lopez, Rolando Romero and Subriel Matias. Matias is the IBF Junior Welterweight Champion. His record stands at 20-1, with all wins coming by knockout. Matias has also recently signed with Matchroom Boxing, making it easier for Haney to get the fight since he boxes on DAZN.

Another option is to fight Teofimo Lopez. Lopez holds the WBO Junior Welterweight Title. Their rivalry began at 135 pounds. They were on course to face each other, only for Lopez to lose to George Kambosos Jr. Since Haney has fought under Top Rank before, he could crossover again.

The last option is against Romero. Rolly is the WBA Junior Welterweight Champion. Romero is with PBC, who has historically not had a good working relationship with DAZN. That is the least likely fight since Haney has never crossed over to PBC.

Before those comments about staying at 140, there were suggestions that Haney could move up to 147. He admitted that his focus was on making the biggest fights for the most money. But by staying at 140, he can make history and earn huge amounts of money.

Haney’s Legacy

“I’ve done the legacy fights, I got the belts, I’m in the history books forever. Now it’s about making the biggest fights happen for the most amount of money. After the last fight, I said I’ve done the legacy fights, I got the belts, I’m in the history books forever.

“Now it’s about making the biggest fights happen for the most amount of money and make big events. And here we are, arguably the biggest fight in 2024 — I think the biggest fight. It’s going to be a mega event. The New Face of Boxing. It’s going to catapult me. It’s going to prove I am the new ‘Face of Boxing,’ I am the man, and I’m a huge draw,” Haney stated
