De La Hoya Slams Mayweather's Exhibitions - 'So Embarrassing'

Oscar De La Hoya hit out at Floyd Mayweather for his continual exhibitions.

Mayweather boxed John Gotti III in their rematch. The first bout ended in a brawl after the fight was called off for foul language. Gotti then swung at the Mayweather as the entourage from both sides entered the ring. Gotti ended up getting a six-month suspension, while Mayweather survived without any injuries. This set up the narrative for a rematch. Gotti talked up a big game and promised to put on a show. The fight was one-sided, with Gotti failing to offer up any resistance.

The home crowd began booing in the final round due to Gotti’s lacklustre performance. While that may have been the case, Mayweather revealed that he has three possible further exhibitions lined up. That has not gone down well with De La Hoya, who lashed out at Mayweather for putting on fights that have not resonated with the public.

De La Hoya Reacts

De La Hoya appeared to suggest that Mayweather may be struggling for money due to his lavish lifestyle. He referenced a lawsuit from a Miami jeweller who is requesting that Mayweather pay him approximately $4 million, which is outstanding.

“Floyd Mayweather fought in another exhibition against Gotti on Saturday. A real [bad] show that left the crowd booing at the end. But in the middle of the second round, Floyd literally had the referee swapped out. He didn’t like that the referee told him to stop hitting behind the head. Floyd is used to getting away with whatever he wants and he wasn’t getting away with it this time,It was so embarrassing. Floyd, you’re 50 years old, you’re a legend of the sport…I know life is hard and life is expensive but come on man, put your legacy first,” De La Hoya said

De La Hoya then turned his attention to Canelo Alvarez. The pair have not been on the best terms since Alvarez left Golden Boy. During the Jaime Munguia presser, Canelo accused De La Hoya of trying to steal money from him. The pair almost squared up to each other as De La Hoya shut down those claims. The Golden Boy promoter sued Canelo for defamation.

Mayweather’s Finances

However, Alvarez had the last laugh as Canelo beat his fighter Munguia, who later left Golden Boy to sign with Top Rank. Canelo has been criticized for not fighting David Benavidez. The Mexican demanded $200 million to make the fight, raising suggestions that he was pricing himself out. Turki Alalshikh is keen on making that fight, but Canelo’s demands may make it impossible. De La Hoya questioned Canelo’s heart for not taking the toughest fight, given that Benavidez now boxes at 175.

“My man Turki Alalshikh, is making sure that real boxing is on its way back and he’s standing on making the best fights happen which is why Canelo doesn’t like him cause he is demanding everyone to fight the very best… Canelo,” De La Hoya stated
