De La Hoya Exposes Canelo - 'You're Afraid Of David Benavidez'

Oscar De La Hoya has continued his feud with Canelo Alvarez with an X-rated jibe at the boxer.

De La Hoya and Canelo’s relationship turned sour when Alvarez left Golden Boy Promotions in 2020. Canelo accused De La Hoya of hypocrisy, calling out his lack of loyalty. The two butted heads at the presser for Canelo’s fight with Jaime Munguia. De La Hoya took to the stage, calling out Canelo by reminding the boxer that he had built his career. He finished his speech by telling Canelo to put some ‘respect’ on his name.

Alvarez responded by accusing De La Hoya of trying to steal money from him and Gennady Golovkin. The two then nearly squared up to each other, as things could have gotten out of control. De La Hoya would then file a lawsuit for defamation, with things turning sour. Canelo would have the last laugh as he beat Oscar’s Munguia to remain the Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion. But since then, the feud has continued. De La Hoya released the following clip, accusing Canelo of ducking Benavidez. He also mocked the fighter for making him and Minguia lots of money for taking that fight.

De La Hoya Reacts

“Canelo, I’ve just saw a video where you’re still talking…[rubbish]. All you say is…oh, he stole from me’. Well, obviously, aside from defaming me, why don’t you look inside your own circle because I know for a fact that people are stealing from you. By the way, you lined my pockets, and you made Munguia a… load of money all because you’re afraid of David Benavidez,” De La Hoya

Outside of the ring, Canelo’s future remains unclear. The IBF has ordered him to defend his belt against William Scull. The fight will be tough to sell since Canelo has been accused of ducking Benavidez and not facing Terence Crawford. However, those boxers may only want that fight if they can get undisputed. That may leave Canelo no choice but to face his mandatory. Another alternative is to move up to 175 or beyond.

Canelo’s Future

There is a possible rematch with Dmitry Bivol, which could be for undisputed. This depends on Bivol beating Artur Beterbiev on October 12. Alvarez was also linked with a move to cruiserweight to face  Badou Jack. Jack was the WBC Cruiserweight Champion. The fight never happened due to the failure to agree on a catchweight. However, the IBF Cruiserweight Champion Jai Opetai has welcomed a fight with Bivol and Canelo.

“There’s only one in the division, and cruiserweight is my division. If Canelo came up to my division, I feel l like he is too small. It would be a bad move for him, but that’s another fight. How can you say no to that? The Shiek [Turki Alalshikh] actually asked me. last week, he rang me and asked me and said, ‘Would you fight Canelo?’ He said 175 lbs, and I wouldn’t be able to make anything lower than cruiser,” Opetai stated

With Canelo’s next fight unclear, he must stay focused on the task ahead. That will involve ignoring any background noise coming from De La Hoya.
