Canelo’s Media Workout For Charlo, Eubank Jr. Wants Alvarez And More
Canelo Alvarez held his pre-fight media workout for the Jermell Charlo fight as the Mexican had a lot to say.
Canelo will defend his super middleweight titles as Charlo attempts to shock the world and become undisputed at 168. Although Canelo is the heavy favorite, the narrative running into the fight is that Canelo may not be the same fighter that he used to be.
Despite only having two losses on his record, his performances of late have been questionable. The defeat to Dmitry Bivol and the failure to stop GGG and John Ryder were highlighted. While the Mexican did undergo surgery on his wrist, Canelo is now ready to silence his doubters.
Canelo On Charlo
“And I never forget, no. He say Canelo going down and Canelo can’t do this, can’t do that. He never believed in my skills. But guess what? He’s gonna find out soon. So, I’m very excited for this fight because he and his brother never believe in my skills. And that’s one of the things that motivate me for this fight. And I’m very excited because it’s almost here,” Alvarez
And provided that Canelo does get past Charlo, Eddy Reynoso has confirmed that his fighter is ready to take on any challenge.
That would raise hopes that a fight with David Benavidez could finally get made after the latter has been waiting in his WBC mandatory position for over a year.
Not only that, but it does suggest that the Mexican is targeting the biggest fights out there. And given that he is a four-division champion, Canelo could have been forgiven for taking things easy.
Reynoso On Alvarez
“Canelo is ready to fight whoever it might be, but right now, we are squarely focused on Jermell Charlo, and that’s our task on September 30th. We’re ready for whoever comes our way following September 30th, but that’s who we have our sights set on,” Reynoso
Eubank Jr. Wants Canelo
And one man who could be ready to face Canelo is none other than Chris Eubank Jr. The latter is keen on facing Canelo Alvarez in the UK in what would be a lucrative event.
Eubank’s confidence is riding high following his tenth-round-stoppage win over Liam Smith. The victory followed after he teamed up with his new trainer, Brian McIntyre, as Eubank appeared rejuvenated.
In the aftermath of his win, Eubank called out several names including Conor Benn and Gennady Golovkin. But now it appears that the super middleweight champion is also on his list.
“Canelo goes where the money is and I can’t think of any bigger money fights than me versus Canelo. I know he wants to fight in the UK, it’s a huge market. There’s not many guys there that people would like to see fight more than me and Alvarez.
“But, you know, he’s one of them guys, he really does make the rules. He does what he wants, he moves up in weight, he comes down in weight, he holds belts in different weight divisions and he does all these things that other fighters could just never do. So it’s hard to kind of target him,” Eubank
Aside from having a fan base behind him, Alvarez facing Eubank does nothing for his legacy. And when it comes to big paydays, Canelo is capable of commanding them against anyone. However, fighting in the UK would be a unique opportunity. And facing Eubank may given him just that chance.
Canelo’s PBC Deal
Regardless of what Canelo does, he is in a good place. Alvarez opened up on his relationship with Al Haymon in light of his current three-fight deal with the PBC.
Alvarez ended his relationship with Matchroom Boxing, DAZN and Eddie Hearn in order to cross the street. A key factor was the failure to secure the Dmitry Bivol fight as Alvarez sought out other options.
The last six of his seven fights had been promoted by Matchroom, with the only exception being when Canelo beat Caleb Plant to become the undisputed super middleweight champion.
But now it is a fresh chapter as the 33-year-old enters towards the latter parts of his career. And by the looks of it, Canelo is satisfied with where things are at.
“I really like Al Haymon and I’m happy to be here. We love being involved in these kinds of fights. Al Haymon, thank you for this too. Showtime, everybody involved. I think right now the best promoters are Canelo Promotions and PBC,” Alvarez
It is not exactly clear if Canelo will walk away from the sport following the three fights. However, he is a four-division world champion with nothing else to prove in the sport.
So the question moving forward will be how hungry is Canelo on breaking records. But with that there is always father time. And that is something that the Mexican will have to be wary of moving forward.
