De La Hoya Expects Canelo Vs. Berlanga To Flop – ‘$90 For This Snoozefest’
Oscar De La Hoya expects Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga to flop on PPV.
The fight takes place on Mexican Independence Weekend on September 14. It will go up against UFC 306, which will feature Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili’s headline event. Canelo’s fight has been priced at $89.99, which has received mass backlash. De La Hoya called it a robbery as Canelo is expected to secure a routine win.
Meanwhile, the Saudis have said they want to set a global PPV price of $20. Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois will be priced at that figure, putting pressure on Canelo’s future fights. The Mexican cannot command big figures unless he is willing to fight the best. Oscar was clear that his fight would not do well.
De La Hoya Reacts
“I’m the PPV king. Canelo vs Berlanga fight will not exceed 100,000 homes. Nobody is paying $90 for this snoozefest. I am just speaking the facts, as always. That should be free,” De La Hoya said
Nevertheless, Canelo will back himself. His fight with Jermell Charlo produced a live gate of over $20 million despite the scrutiny. Charlo was moving up two weight classes from 154 pounds. And yet, Canelo still brought in a huge crowd. His last fight against Jaime Munguia was also priced at $89.99. It was questioned after Canelo avoided David Benavidez.
He wanted $200 million to make the fight. But the Munguia bout still sold over 500,000 PPVs. Canelo has talked up the fight with Berlanga due to the fiery build-up. In their presser, they almost came to blows. Berlanga was unhappy that Canelo kept cutting him off, as Alvarez vowed to punish him. The Mexican and Puerto Rican rivalry will help promote the fight, as Canelo promised to punish his opponent.
“I like them like that. So I like them to be confident and do a lot of talking. I like breaking their face when they talk like that. I’m eagerly awaiting that day. It’ll be the beatdown of his life,” Canelo
Can Berlanga Win?
Nevertheless, there is a chance that Berlanga causes an upset. He is chasing his first-ever world title. He is 22-0 with 17 knockouts to his name. While he has only stopped one fighter in his last six bouts, he has nothing to lose. A win makes him a PPV star and earns him a lucrative rematch at the least. Berlanga is also receiving support from those in the boxing industry. David Benavidez Sr. wants Berlanga to win to prevent Canelo from picking easier fights and keeping the belts hostage. If Berlanga pulls off the win, any rematch could prove more lucrative.
“I’m the bigger guy, I’m longer, I’m stronger. He’s gonna try to look for ways to break my arms down, and I’ve got the power to knock him out. When we land on him, he’s gonna feel something different for sure—I guarantee you, he’s gonna feel something different,” Berlanga stated
“I feel that Canelo has this belt hostage for a long time, they already took one away but he still has three of them…I’ll be happy if Berlanga can beat him,” Benavidez Sr.
