Christian Mbilli Defeats An Injured Sergiy Derevyanchenko; Fans Not Impressed
Christian Mbilli overcame a dogged Sergiy Derevyanchenko to win a unanimous decision in their ten-round super middleweight bout.
Mbilli could not put away his man despite Derevyanchenko injuring his left bicep, which became evident at the end of the fourth round. It turned out Mbilli hurt his left hand, which he disclosed after the fight, but in truth, both men put on a determined performance.
Mbilli started the fight at a fast pace, which he is accustomed to doing. He pushed Derevyanchenko on the ropes as he connected with several right hands over the top. Derevyanchenko reminded his opponent of his boxing skills, landing some counters in a thrilling opener.
Mbilli Starts Fast
Derevyanchenko’s team made it clear he had to avoid the ropes. He began the second well by landing a right uppercut, a punch which proved very successful. But Mbilli was the sharper shooter, getting his shots off quicker, as he shook Derevyanchenko with a big right hand in the second.
In round four, the tide of the fight shifted. Derevyanchenko had by far the most successful round. He was boxing and moving, as Mbilli could not pin his man down. However, it transpired he had injured his left bicep as he informed his corner he could not throw his hook. It was a huge blow, given it was his biggest weapon.
Derevyanchenko’s Injury
Derevyanchenko was now using one arm, but he refused to back down. He responded with an uppercut in round five, defying the swelling over his eye after the halfway stage. Derevyanchenko had another good round in the seventh. He landed sweeping hooks, which buzzed Mbilli, who was hurt.
But that came at a price, as Derevyanchenko’s corner told him at the end of the eighth that they would pull him out if he could not fight with one arm. Although Derevyanchenko continued, he never looked like getting a stoppage. Mbilli tried to end the fight in the 12th, landing crushing right hands. The stoppage never came, but he won a wide decision on the cards: 100-90, 99-91, 98-92.
Post-Fight
“My opponent has the injury, but he’s a very good boxer. I had not seen this injury. How he was moving around…was very good. I have learned a lot, you know. This man is a gladiator. He’s a warrior. He was in a difficult position, he come back. [And] he was fighting, fighting. He was a very good boxer. I have learned a lot. I’m going to go back at home and look at fight again and have some lessons from this,” Mbilli
“I [didn’t] want to lose. I didn’t want to lose and still [wanted to continue] fighting. My legs [were] good. I have only one arm and I needed to move because when I stay he punch [in] combinations. Next round [after I injured my arm] I want to punch through the shot but I can’t. I feel and understand I can’t punch with left,” Derevyanchenko
