Biography

Early Life and Amateur Career

 

Sergiy Derevyanchenko was born on October 31, 1985, in Feodosiya, Ukraine. Growing up in a country with a rich boxing tradition, Derevyanchenko was introduced to the sport at an early age. He began training in boxing at the age of ten, inspired by his father, who was also involved in the sport. His early dedication to training and natural talent quickly set him apart from his peers, and he soon became a standout in local and regional competitions.

 

Derevyanchenko’s amateur career was marked by numerous achievements and notable victories. He first gained international attention in 2007 when he competed in the World Amateur Boxing Championships held in Chicago. In this prestigious tournament, Derevyanchenko demonstrated his skill and resilience by defeating several top-tier opponents. His notable victories included wins over well-regarded boxers such as Alfonso Blanco from Venezuela and Darren O’Neill from Ireland, ultimately earning him a bronze medal in the middleweight division.

 

One of Derevyanchenko’s significant achievements in his amateur career was his participation in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Representing Ukraine, he showcased his talent on one of the biggest stages in sports. Although he did not medal, his performance was commendable, and he gained valuable experience competing against the world’s best amateur boxers. In addition to his success at the World Championships and the Olympics, Derevyanchenko also excelled in other international competitions. He won a gold medal at the 2010 European Amateur Boxing Championships in Moscow, further solidifying his reputation as one of the top middleweight amateurs in the world.

 

Professional Career

 

Derevyanchenko made his professional debut on July 23, 2014, at the BB King Blues Club & Grill in New York City, securing a second-round stoppage victory over Cromwell Gordon. His early professional career was marked by a series of impressive victories, quickly establishing himself as a rising star in the middleweight division. Derevyanchenko’s aggressive style and technical prowess allowed him to maintain an undefeated record through his first 12 fights.

 

One of his notable early wins came against Sam Soliman on July 21, 2016, where he achieved a second-round TKO at Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut. This victory highlighted Derevyanchenko’s knockout power and ability to compete against experienced opponents. He continued to build his reputation with a series of stoppage victories, including a fifth-round TKO against Kemahl Russell on March 14, 2017, and a twelfth-round TKO against Tureano Johnson on August 25, 2017, at Buffalo Run Casino in Oklahoma.

 

Derevyanchenko’s first major title opportunity came on October 27, 2018, when he faced Daniel Jacobs for the vacant IBF middleweight title at the Hulu Theater in New York City. Despite a valiant effort, Derevyanchenko lost via split decision, marking his first professional defeat. He bounced back with a unanimous decision victory over Jack Culcay on April 13, 2019, at the Minneapolis Armory, setting up another title shot.

 

On October 5, 2019, Derevyanchenko faced Gennady Golovkin at Madison Square Garden for the vacant IBF and IBO middleweight titles. In a thrilling and closely contested bout, Derevyanchenko lost by unanimous decision, but his performance earned him widespread respect and recognition for his skill and tenacity. His subsequent fight against Jermall Charlo on September 26, 2020, for the WBC middleweight title also ended in a unanimous decision loss, but again showcased his resilience and determination.

 

Despite setbacks, Derevyanchenko continued to compete at a high level. He faced Carlos Adames on December 5, 2021, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, losing a majority decision. He rebounded with a unanimous decision victory over Joshua Conley on July 30, 2022, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. His next major fight came on June 10, 2023, against Jaime Munguía for the vacant WBC Silver super middleweight title, where he lost by unanimous decision at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.

 

Most recently, on April 20, 2024, Derevyanchenko secured a unanimous decision victory over Vaughn Alexander at the Barclays Center, retaining his status as a formidable competitor in the division. Throughout his professional career, Derevyanchenko has demonstrated his ability to compete at the highest levels, displaying skill, resilience, and determination in each bout.
