Brook Backs Jaron Ennis To Be The Future Of The Welterweight Division

Kell Brook has backed Jaron Ennis to be the future of the welterweight division following in the footsteps of Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford. 

Ennis is the current IBF interim welterweight champion following his victory over Roiman Villa, where he stopped the latter in the tenth round.

That put him in line to face the winner of Spence vs. Crawford on July 29th, 2023. While that may be the case, it is likely that the winner will move up to 154 pounds.

Therefore, that could make Ennis the full IBF champion. Regardless of what the case may be, Brook has backed Ennis to do big things. 

“He is looking good, so good that he could be the one to succeed [Spence and Crawford]. He has great ability, punching power and like these guys, massive boxing IQ. I put him up there in the elite, among the best in the world.

“We don’t know for certain [how good he can be] until he gets in there with someone better or equal to himself and we see how he responds, how he takes a shot and deals with pressure on a big stage. That is when we know when a fighter has a real X-factor,” Brook

Up until now, Ennis is making all the right noises. His record stands at 31 wins with 28 knockouts. And given that he is just 26-years-old, Ennis has plenty left in the tank as he enters his prime years. 

As for Brook, the star’s own future remains unclear. Following his win over Amir Khan, the former IBF welterweight champion decided to walk away from the sport.

However, in the aftermath, the boxer did indicate his desire to return. He has been linked with a fight against Conor Benn.

But given that the latter has been suspended by UKAD following his two failed VADA tests for Clomiphene, his future remains unclear. 

With that being said, the next few months will be crucial to whether Brook does make a return. Time will tell.
