Boxing World Reacts To Fury's Retirement - 'I Saw That Coming'

Tyson Fury has announced his retirement from boxing, which has left fans wondering whether he is serious about the announcement.

His comments arrived following his second defeat against Oleksandr Usyk, where he missed out on becoming a unified heavyweight champion. It was also a major setback since Fury would have been in a position to fight the winner of Daniel Dubois vs. Joseph Parker for the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship. The Gypsy King was unhappy with the results in both fights, claiming that he had done enough to win. The retirement news also means that fans will not see the Anthony Joshua fight, which the latter targeted for this year.

It would arguably be one of the biggest domestic British fights ever since Fury and Joshua both came unstuck against Usyk. The fight would have been seen as a contest between the best domestic heavyweights of this generation. It is important to bear in mind that Fury has retired before. He did so after defeating Wladimir Klitschko to become the Unified Heavyweight Champion. Fury pulled out of the rematch due to a combination of injuries and mental health issues.

He then came back to become the WBC Heavyweight Champion by defeating Deontay Wilder. Fury then stopped Dillian Whyte, after which he announced his retirement. But that retirement news was short-lived, as he came back to face Derek Chisora in a trilogy. The Gypsy King’s comments will understandably be a disappointment to British fans who want to see the Joshua fight. And the news has also stirred a strong reaction from boxing community members.

Reaction

“God bless him. If that’s what he wants to do, that’s what he should do. He’s made a lot of money, he’s had a fantastic career, probably joint best heavyweight of this century. “He’s been in some magnificent fights. I’ve loved every minute of it, and I hope all the fans have as well. He’s been brilliant for British and world boxing, and I wish him a lovely retirement and to enjoy his life,” Frank Warren

“I saw that coming. Yeah, I saw that coming. If you ever wanna come back and get the max, you’ve got to retire first, haven’t you? Someone has got to bring you out of retirement. If that’s the last we see of Tyson Fury, good luck to him. I doubt it, personally, but whatever he chooses to do much respect for him. I think he’ll wanna fight again. [And] I think he’ll get bored.

“I think he’ll know that the British public wanna see the AJ fight. My personal belief is, we’ll see him in the ring again. I don’t get disappointed. What will be will be. In life, some things are out of your hands. You can’t get disappointed by someone else’s action, you can only be disappointed by things you control. If he wants to retire, there’s nothing we can do about it. If he’s up for the challenge. [And] if he’s up for the biggest fight in the sport, great! But we can’t dictate what Tyson Fury does,” Eddie Hearn

“Well, there goes the big announcement. Guess we need to refocus on the other Fury again,” Jake Paul
