Amanda Serrano rematches Erika Cruz on January 3, 2026, in a defense of her WBO and WBA featherweight titles, as we look at how the fight could play out.

The fight will take place from the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as Serrano fights in her hometown. The first fight was a victorious occasion for Serrano, who won a 2023 unanimous decision. The result meant she was the first Puerto Rican undisputed champion in the four-belt era, cleaning up all the titles at featherweight.

This fight is also historic, as Serrano will box under three-minute rounds, the same as men’s boxing rules. However, she will do so following a devastating loss. She came unstuck in their third fight with Katie Taylor in July, losing a unanimous decision to the undisputed junior welterweight champion. Serrano has now failed to win a single Taylor fight, as that chapter looks closed. As for Cruz, she will enter the fight full of confidence. She secured a TKO victory over Maricruz Rodriguez Gonzalez in May, with all eyes on securing revenge.

Reaction

“Every time I step into the ring, I fight for all women, for equality and for Puerto Rico. Getting to fight three-minute rounds in a unified world title defense in front of my people will be one of the proudest moments of my career. When I got injured last March, I promised I’d come back to fight in Puerto Rico, and now the moment is finally here. I want to thank Erika Cruz for her choice to face me over 10 x 3:00 (minute rounds) and for joining me in making this statement for equality in women’s boxing. Together, we are showing all the young girls out there that they can do anything they put their mind to, and that women’s boxers deserve the same opportunities as men,” Serrano

“I’m very happy and excited for this great opportunity to once again face the great Puerto Rican champion, Amanda Serrano. I’m grateful to my promoter, Universal Promotions, and to MVP for making this rematch a reality. This is the most exciting rivalry in world boxing. Mexico versus Puerto Rico means a guaranteed war. If our first fight was a colossal battle, you can’t miss what will happen on January 3. Viva Mexico,” Cruz

The Approach

Serrano must establish her dominance from range, utilizing her southpaw stance and powerful left hand to dictate pace. She will use her jab to control the center of the ring and punish Cruz as she closes the distance. A key tactical change for Serrano will be utilizing the longer rounds for strategic bursts and recovery. She can spend the first two minutes building offense and wearing down Cruz, knowing she has a full third minute to land a meaningful power shot.

Cruz’s primary tactic will be to turn the fight into a chaotic brawl by constantly closing the distance. She will rely on relentless head movement and taking half-steps to cut off the ring, preventing Serrano from boxing on the outside. Cruz will aim to land short, fast combinations in the pocket and apply heavy pressure. And by having secured a TKO in her last outing, Cruz’s confidence is high.
