A must win for both in the main event as the UFC return to the APEX- UFC Vegas 91 Preview

April 24, 2024
1 week

Now UFC 300 is in the past the champions league of Mixed Martial Arts returns to the Apex and have some career defining fights on the card. Two flyweights coming off losses and desperately need to get back in the win column, a top 15 looking to find his form again, a fight that will deliver in Jonathon Pearce vs David Onama and a 40-year-old veteran who is looking to cause more upsets.

In the main event we see the number 5 and number 8 flyweight meet in the octagon in hopes of getting the win and potentially begin a run to the title. Matheus Nicolau was 7-1 in the UFC and a win away from a title until he faced Brandon Royval and was on the receiving end of brutal first round defeat. It will be interesting to see if Matheus Nicolau can bounce back from his 3rd TKO defeat all of his losses haver came by TKO/KO which will raise eyebrows about his chin, and he has history of not being active but he 100% has the skillset to bounce back from the defeat and get back on his run towards the title.

The man that will be standing across from Matheus Nicolau will be Alex Perez who is finally looking to be active in his career as this is his 2nd fight of 2024 which can only be a positive for his career as he is in the octagon consistently his last win was in June of 2020 a lot has changed since then in the world of Mixed Martial Arts and we don’t really know where Alex Perez fits into this flyweight division as he had a title against Devison Figueiredo in which he got submitted in the first round at UFC 255 since that defeat Perez has had 10 cancelled fights which is just not UFC level and he’s had too many opportunities but now is he is time to prove what he has to offer to this flyweight division.

The winner of this fight will have a potential number one contender matchup against either Amir Albazi or Muhammad Mokaev which will make them closer to a potential title fight in the near future and both of these men in the main event will be keeping an eye on next week’s main event which features the champion of the flyweight division Alexandre Pantoja take on Steve Erceg. So, we can expect the winner of Nicolau vs Perez to mention what will be next for them however the loser of this fight is in a real predicament and will see themselves fighting to protecting their ranking spot.

This fight is a real MUST WIN for both.

In the co main event we see Ryan Spann take on Bogdan Guskov which is a fight where Ryan Span is fighting to keep the number 11 ranking. However, coming of two back-to-back defeats it is difficult to see if Ryan Spann is still a top 15 light heavyweight contender, we know he has the skills to be a top 15 light heavyweight, but does he have the commitment to get back in the win column and try to push through the rankings. Ryan Spann’s last win was over a year and half ago against Dominck Reyes who is also struggling in the fight against Reyes Spann also missed weight in that fight which does not look good for Spann as it questions his dedication to the sport.

This is Ryan Spann’s last victory in November of 2022.

The man trying to take his number 11th ranking is Bogdan Guskov who is currently 1-1 in the UFC with the defeat coming to number 9 ranked Volkan Ozdemir so this is a career defining fight for Guskov because 2 losses to two ranked opponents will not look good and he will question if he is top 15 level. It is no surprise why Guskov is getting this shot at Ryan Spann as Guskov is a big finisher 15 wins 15 finishes 13 by TKO/KO and 2 via submission. This is a fight where we could see the resurgence of a ranked fighter or the arrival of a new exciting fighter that will must watch TV two fighters who like to finish fights someone could steal the show in the co-main event.

As we look down the card, we see a matchup of England vs Uganda as Jonathon Pearce will fight the always exciting David Onama. David Onama has never won by decision and does not have boring fights. I can confidently say this fight will get a bonus of some sorts the fight will catch fire if and be a barnburner Onama. Jonathon Pearce has fought some good fighters Joe Lauzon, Christian Rodriquez, and Darren Elkins. We cannot forget one of the fights of the year in 2022 between David Onama and Nate Landwehr in which David Onama was on the receiving end of a close decision defeat. I do not Pearce vs Onama will be that good, but we can dream.

Opening the main card is the veteran “The dirty bird” Tim Means he has been in the UFC for 12 years and has had many difficulties but is currently on a up and looks to continue that.

This is Tim Means early on in his UFC career and he is still here 12 years later looking to upset Uros Medic to build of his win over Andre Fialho and potentially get an opportunity at the top 15.
UFC Vegas 91 is not the UFC 300, but it is worth the watch.
