Ben Whittaker Calls For Mega British Clash With Eubank Jr.
Ben Whittaker has called for a fight with Chris Eubank Jr. in what would be a mega-domestic British clash.
Whittaker is seen as a rising British star known for his unorthodox boxing style, which has drawn comparisons with Prince Naseem. The boxer is currently undefeated with an 8-0 record as he boxes Liam Cameron on October 12. This will be the fourth fight he has had this year, as he aims to secure a big name. Meanwhile, Eubank has been out of the ring for over a year.
His last bout was a stoppage win against Liam Smith. It was payback for their first fight, in which Eubank was stopped. However, Smith did injure himself early in the fight. In addition, there were suggestions he struggled to make weight, raising question marks over how well Eubank really did. Eubank will fight on the same card as Whittaker when he takes on Kamil Szeremeta.
Eubank Vs. Whittaker
The problem with making a Eubank fight with Whittaker is that they fight in different weight classes. Eubank boxes at middleweight, while Whittaker fights at light heavyweight. This would require either fighter to move up or down or secure a reasonable catchweight. Eubank previously said he was keen on Whittaker.
“I genuinely have never thought about that. I’ve watched him. Actually, it’s pretty insane how popular he is in terms of social media. He’s getting a lot of attention. I don’t know how many fights he’s had. He hasn’t fought anybody but his style and everything he’s doing is getting him a lot of attention on social media, which is great. That’s really what England needs. It’s very rare to have that in the UK. There’s not many fighters who get that attention on social media,” Eubank said
Now, Whittaker has reacted, stating that if enough money is put up, he would take the fight.
“If the money’s there, sign me up. I’m bigger, I’m younger, I’m fresher. I wouldn’t turn it down. I’m bigger. They make weight classes for a reason and I think he’s coming to the end of his career. I’m in the middle of starting my career so for me it’s probably the right time to catch him,” Whittaker said
Will It Happen?
The fight presents a different risk-reward for both fighters. Eubank is at the tail end of his career, knowing that a loss to Whittaker damages his chances of securing the Canelo Alvarez fight. However, even with a loss, Eubank will secure a big payday since he will be seen as the A-side. As for Whittaker, a defeat will derail his career as he is seen as a rising prospect.
But a win will be the biggest victory of his career and propel his name even further. They both fight with BOXXER now that Eubank has signed a deal with the promotional company. Since they both box on Sky Sports, it makes it much more likely to make the bout. If there is enough demand, fans could see that bout.
