What’s Next For Anthony Yarde After The Benavidez Loss?

Anthony Yarde has spoken out in the aftermath of his stoppage loss to David Benavidez.
Yarde was stopped in the seventh round, as he missed out on securing the WBC Light Heavyweight Title. Yarde was dropped earlier in the seventh and was bleeding from the nose. The ringside doctor was called in to examine his heavily swollen right eye, leading to the eventual stoppage. It was the third title stoppage loss after previous defeats to Sergey Kovalev and Artur Beterbiev. Naturally, this raises questions over what is next for Yarde.
Yarde’s Future

“Those that know me know that I’m pissed. I’ll be back better, stronger. I know what I was getting myself into, but I thought I could pull it off, trying to shock the world, trying to be great again. He was just the better man tonight. Congrats to him. Congrats to his team. I’m just letting everyone know I’m good. Some people were worried because my nose was bleeding. Yeah, I’m good. I’m going to eat some good food, and go on holiday, and do some other stuff that I’m not going to mention,” Yarde said

Yarde’s focus should be on a rebuilding phase to restore his confidence and make technical adjustments, particularly in defense and ring generalship. For example, a fight against a respected, durable gatekeeper like Callum Johnson or a European title-level fighter such as Joshua Buatsi would serve this purpose. This phase allows Yarde to demonstrate improvements in pacing, head movement, and energy conservation over 10 to 12 rounds.

The most compelling argument for retirement is his 0-3 record in world title fights, with all three ending via stoppage (Kovalev, Beterbiev, Benavidez). This pattern strongly suggests that while he is a top-tier fighter, he lacks the technical defense, durability, or conditioning required to withstand the pressure of a 12-round fight against the division’s elite. Repeated knockout losses accumulate damage and pose long-term health risks.
