Warren Defends Chisora's Headbutt - 'Derek Was With His Kids'

Frank Warren has defended Derek Chisora for headbutting a food delivery driver.

According to reports, Chisora was with his family in London when the altercation started. The clip demonstrates Chisora and the delivery driver getting into an argument. The driver then pushes Chisora, who defends himself by using a headbutt. The police were called, but there were no charges for Chisora, who was not deemed at fault. Given the incident happened less than two weeks before the Joe Joyce fight on July 27, it was not the best preparation.

This is particularly since Chisora has made a habit of controversial behavior. He infamously slapped Vitali Klitschko and spat at his brother Wladimir Klitschko when they were in the ring. Chisora was also involved in a brawl against David Haye prior to their fight. Meanwhile, Derek threw a table at Dillian Whyte in the build-up for their fight. Despite the criticism coming his way, Warren backed Chisora.

Warren Reacts

“Derek was with his children and the delivery bloke started pushing Derek. Derek defended himself, that’s how I see it. Yeah, he was very disappointed it all happened. Apparently, they were eating and the guy caused a little bit of an issue.

“The police were called and that was the end of it. Nothing happened. Just look at the video. You’ll see the bloke comes to him and starts pushing his fist out and Derek did what he did. He was with his kids. That was it as far as I understand. It is what is now. It’s all over. The police were called. Nothing happened. They didn’t arrest him or the delivery driver,” Warren said

The incident will propel more eyes on the fight, a career-defining moment for both men. Chisora is 40, with question marks over whether he should retire. He has only won two out of his last six fights. There are also worries he has signs of CTE, with slurred speech. As for Joyce, he is 38 years old. He bounced back from his two consecutive defeats to Zhilei Zhang by beating Kash Ali.

Winner’s Future

But given that he was stopped in both fights, there are suggestions that his chin has gone. With no title shot likely for either man, even if they come out with a win, the fight is seen as who gets the bragging rights. Alternatively, it may lead to a bigger payday if they can secure a fight on one of the Saudi shows on the undercard. Warren was clear that it was make or break for both men.

“It’s on and I’m looking forward to it. It’s quite an interesting fight. I said a couple of years ago I felt that Derek should be retiring, so he’s going to be able to prove me wrong and we’ll see who’s right. The loser in this fight I really do feel like their time at the top level will definitely be over. This is a must-win fight for both of them,” Warren added
