Tszyu Welcomes The Crawford Fight - 'An Opportunity To Become Great'

Tim Tszyu is ready to fight Terence Crawford, provided he gets past Sebastian Fundora.

The Australian takes on Fundora, a last-minute replacement after Keith Thurman pulled out. Thurman injured his bicep, forcing Tszyu to make a decision. He agreed to face Fundora, who is a huge southpaw. His record stands at 20-1-1, with 13 wins coming through knockouts.

While he suffered his first career defeat against Brian Mendoza in his last bout, he was winning the fight. The fight will see Tszyu defend his WBO Junior Middleweight Belt. The vacant WBC Junior Middleweight Title is also on the line. The WBO has announced that the winner will face Crawford, the WBO Super Champion at 147.

“WBO will sanction Tszyu vs Fundora. The winner must face the WBO mandatory challenger [Crawford] within 180 days. Negotiations for WBO mandatory commitment must be started five days after the fight,” WBO President Paco Valcarcel said

That makes Bud a mandatory for the winner if he moves up to 154, which looks like it will happen. Tszyu was ready for the challenge.

Crawford On Tszyu

“That’s great. It’s an opportunity to become great. This is the first opportunity to save the show. Once the opportunity arises for Crawford, that’s going to be a war. Spence didn’t look the same [against Crawford]. From the get-go, he looked off balance and maybe weight drained. It was different. Me and him are a completely different style. He’s a southpaw, and I’m orthodox. It’s sweet, man. I’ve had four fights in 12 months,” Tszyu said

The fight also allows Crawford to become undisputed in a third weight class. After stopping Errol Spence Jr., Crawford became the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era and the first man to become undisputed in a second weight class. Once the Spence rematch broke down, Bud targeted a fight with Canelo Alvarez, the Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion.

But Canelo dismissed the idea of fighting Crawford since he would get no praise for beating a much smaller man. However, moving up to 154 makes sense since the IBF and WBA belts are vacant. That allows Bud the chance to become undisputed again.

Tszyu On Fundora

A large part of that will depend on who Crawford faces next. Fundora is a huge southpaw, a type of boxer that Crawford has never faced before. But Tszyu is the bigger name, giving Crawford a higher purse if they were to face off. But before that can even be considered, both fighters must get through the bout unscathed. Tszyu is ready to do what it takes to win.

“This fight is awkwardness – you’ve got someone that’s tall, lanky, whose got a completely different style to Thurman who I’ve been prepping for eight weeks – but nothing fazes me, nothing worries me. This is unification so there’s another belt on the line, another legacy-defining type fight … hopefully one day they will say the Tszyu name is the greatest family to ever step foot inside this boxing world,” Tsyzu revealed
