Teofimo Lopez Is The Best Ahead Of Haney – Says Lopez Sr.
Teofimo Lopez Sr. has claimed that his son, Teofimo Lopez Jr., is the best fighter in the junior welterweight division ahead of Devin Haney.
The comments came after Haney beat Regis Prograis to win the WBC title at 140. Haney became a two-weight world champion in his first fight at the weight class. He won every round on the scorecards, showing how impressive the win had been.
Prograis was the biggest puncher in the division, with 24 knockouts in his 29 wins. But Lopez Sr. was not impressed by what he had seen. He questioned whether Prograis was an elite-level fighter. He referenced how Lopez Jr. beat the former undisputed champion Josh Taylor at 140. As such, that made Lopez Jr. the lineal champion and was arguably the bigger win.
Lopez Sr. On Haney
“The man at 140 is Teofimo Lopez. We beat the lineal champion, we got the lineal belt. We beat Josh Taylor. My son is number one at 140, and all these lies that all these guys are talking about all these fighters are the best at 140. Those are all lies. My son should be undisputed because Josh Taylor never lost the belts to nobody.
“Shut up that you’re the best in the division. My son is #1 at 140. That guy fought the easiest challenge in the 140-lb weight division. The only reason he [Haney] took that fight is because Prograis didn’t look good in his last fight [against Danielito Zorrilla last June]. He even to dropped by a guy that nobody even knew. My son would have dropped Prograis in three rounds, easy,” Lopez Sr. said
Lopez Vs. Haney
Lopez does have a better resume than Haney. His wins over Vasiliy Lomachenko, Taylor and Richard Commey show that. Haney also won over Lomachenko, but the result was heavily disputed. Many boxing fans felt Loma had been robbed despite winning a unanimous decision.
This has set up the narrative for a fight at 140. Lopez holds the WBO belt, which sets up a unification fight with Haney, who has the WBC title. Lopez faces Jamaine Ortiz in his next fight, while Haney is linked with Ryan Garcia. Provided they both continue to win, Lopez Sr. was ready to make the fight happen.
“So, they’re [Team Haney] glorifying picking up that belt [WBC 140-lb] like it’s something big, but the only person you got to beat to be the man is Teofimo Lopez. Come and get him. We’re ready. The biggest fight in the division right now is Teofimo Lopez, no matter who he fights.
“I don’t even care about that guy. He ain’t nobody,” said Lopez Sr. when asked if a fight between Teofimo and Haney will happen in 2024. “I’m not sweating about that guy. He’s a fake. He lies about everything all the time, and I don’t like fake people. “You got to say the truth in this sport, and I’m telling you right now, Devin Haney is a fake,” Lopez Sr. stated
