Superlek Tortures Jonathan Haggerty Again to Grab ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai Title

Jonathan Haggerty put on his bravest face. But the English fighter knew when he agreed to fight Superlek Kiatmoo9 that he would have a tough night at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado. Haggerty previously had squared up with Superlek Kiatmoo9 in a Muay Thai battle outside of ONE.

But much like the first time the two men met, Haggerty had no answers for Superlek. For this meeting, Haggerty hardly had a chance to get himself into the fight. When the bout opened, Haggerty attempted to set the pace and earn some respect by throwing some leg kicks.

But Superlek wasn’t interested in waiting around. He was able to work himself into the pocket quickly. When Superlek got in close, Haggerty attempted to fend him off with a right-handed strike. But Superlek timed that punch and countered with a right elbow that laid Haggerty out on the canvas.

The fight was stopped in less than 45 seconds. It halted a six-fight winning streak for Haggerty and gave Superlek a $50,000 performance bonus. Superlek is now on an 11-fight winning streak and added more gold around his waist.

Superlek is also the ONE flyweight kickboxing title holder. He should be competitive while defending both belts for some time. For Haggety, it was a crushing blow. During the first meeting, he suffered a technical knockout in the second round. He will need to make some adjustments to get back on top.

Harrison, Seksan Deliver Exciting Fight

Liam Harrison needed two years following his last Muay Thai battle to return to competition after suffering a serious knee injury during his last fight. Harrison didn’t show much fear during his fight with Seksan Or Kwanmuang.

But the MMAfighting latest news shows that he might have been a little worried. Harrison came out of the gates quickly and hit Seksan with a high number of power punches. But Seksan didn’t seem phased by it.

When Seksan could close the distance, things got ugly for Harrison. Seksan planted Harrison on the canvas twice before scoring the knockout in the middle parts of Round 2. Seksan caught Harrison with an overhand right to stop the fight.

For his impressive performance, Seksan was given a $50,000 performance bonus. Harrison was happy to get back to competition but didn’t want to take too many more knockout losses.

Erdogan Continues to Build His Reputation

Shamil Erdogan needed that win to cement his status as a contender. Taking down a former two-division ONE MMA world champion was a good start to keep him on track for a championship. Erdogan never let former champion Aung La N Sang build up momentum during a 213.75-pound catchweight fight.

Erdogan didn’t wait long before employing his versatility. He rocked Aung in the first round and established top control on the ground. While Aung would survive the onslaught in the first round, this wasn’t a fight that was designed to go long.

During the second round, Erdogan got Aung back down to the mat. But this time, Ergodan was able to make his ground and pound a lot more effective. He picked up a TKO victory late in the third round. Erdogan called out three-division champion Anatoly Malykhin for a title fight after the bout.

Lineker Seems Right at Home

It is hard to know how fighters will handle switching disciplines. Going from boxing to MMA isn’t easy. Neither is going from MMA to Muay Thai. John Lineker made it look like such a transition was possible for fighters who hit with power.

Lineker, a former ONE Bantamweight MMA champion, battered Asa Ten Pow in a bantamweight Muay Thai fight. Lineker didn’t give Asa much time to operate. He was winning a variety of different punches after the opening bell.

Lineker would find the right combination toward the end of the second round. He connected on a right hook that gave him the victory. While Lineker said he plans to go to MMA, his knockout victory in this fight earned him a $50,000 bonus.

Lee Earns Some Bonus Money

Adrian Lee had a good time returning to lightweight MMA action. Nico Cornejo wasn’t ready to handle what Lee had in store for him regarding grappling. While Cornejo, a Colorado native, had plenty of experience in wrestling as an amateur, handling professional fighters is a different hurdle to clear.

Lee, who is just 18, didn’t wait long to force Cornejo to his back. He was able to use his striking to open a window to score a takedown. When the two hit the mats, Lee moved quickly to stop the fight with his overmatched opponent.

Lee started firing off strikes before wrapping up a rear-naked choke. Cornejo tapped out after just a little bit over halfway through the first round. Lee was another fighter who pocketed an extra $50,000 for his performance.

An Unhappy Return

Combat sports isn’t a competition to welcome back athletes who have suffered injuries or health problems with open arms. Alyse Anderson hoped to return from a severe medical issue with a victory.

But the atomweight MMA fight she competed in was against a tough Brazilian opponent, Victoria Souza. Both women had an opportunity to try and land a submission on the ground, but neither could break their opponents’ resolve.

Souza would end up scoring the decision from the judges following a strong overall performance. Souza is now 9-2 in her career.

Here are the rest of the fights from the card not mentioned above:

  • MMA (welterweight), Isi Fitikefu win by unanimous decision over Hiroyuki Tetsuka
  • Muay Thai (142-pound catchweight), Johan Ghazali win by knockout over Josue Cruz, Round 1 3:00
  • Muay Thai (flyweight), Johan Estupinan win by TKO over Sean Climaco, Round 2 1:28
