Ryder Wants GGG, Canelo On Getting Back To His Best

John Ryder has opened up about his desire to face Gennady Golovkin.

The Brit’s last fight was a loss to Canelo Alvarez, as he lost via a unanimous decision. Although that may have been the case, the Brit did put on a commendable performance.

Not only did he give Canelo some trouble with the use of his uppercuts, he managed to last the distance in his home nation of Mexico.

That won Ryder many plaudits, as he now attempts to target a fight with ‘GGG.’ The latter is now 41 years old, who has given up his titles at 160.

His last bout was against Alvarez for the chance to win the undisputed super-middleweight titles. Unfortunately, GGG came up short.

But given that GGG does not have a lot of time left in the sport, Ryder is looking to capitalize on that.

Ryder Wants GGG

“I’d love to fight Golovkin. I know he’s saying about another fight back in Kazakhstan and I’ve love to be in the opposite corner. I don’t mind going into enemy territory, why not? A little world tour to finish off my professional career. We’ll go to Kazakhstan for Golovkin and maybe to America for [Caleb] Plant or Mexico for [Jaime] Munguia,” Ryder

Ryder’s Value

Nevertheless, getting those mega fights may not be so easy. Ryder is also entering into the latter parts of his career since he is 34.

And since he does not have anything to offer by way of a belt, he simply has no value for the top fighters. And yet, Ryder has vowed to come back stronger with the knowledge he has gained from the Canelo fight.

“I’ve learned so much from that Canelo fight, just how up a level they do things. Nothing is rushed, everything is planned and done with conviction. You think that you’re having success but he’s six or seven moves ahead, it lures you into a false sense of security. I know that I’m going to be such a better fight coming back from that loss,” Ryder said

Ryder has shown that he can get in there with the best of them, but the question is can get the better of a top name. Time will tell.

Canelo On Returning To Form

Meanwhile, Canelo Alvarez has blamed his recent below-par performances due to his hand injury. Alvarez lost to Dmitry Bivol, as he was comprehensively outboxed and bullied in a unanimous-decision loss.

Thereafter, the Mexican revealed that he underwent surgery on his wrist, as it became clear that he was not 100 percent for the fight.

As a result, the undisputed super-middleweight champion failed to knockout Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder in this next two fights.

This led to suggestions that Alvarez’s form may have been slipping somewhat. Therefore, Canelo is keen to silence his doubters when he faces Jermell Charlo on September 30th, 2023.

“I’m not happy. I’m happy with all the things I have in my hand. I’m happy, but I’m not 100%. Because of my hand because I’m not able to train 100%,hitting the pads with Eddy [Reynoso], working with Eddy and hitting hard the heavy bags and everything. I think it’s some good fights with PBC, and I always like to work with good people and the best out there, and I think PBC is one of the best. No, we don’t know. We’re 100% focused on Jermell, and then we want to sit down with Al Haymon and see what he thinks,” Alvarez

Nevertheless, it is important to bear in mind the following points. Canelo will be facing Charlo who moves up two weight classes.

And given the huge difference in weight, the performances may not tell as much over where Alvarez is currently at given he is the massive favorite.

In addition, since Canelo has avoided fights with David Benavidez or the Dmitry Bivol rematch, the jury would still be out on whether Canelo was back to his best even with a solid performance against Charlo.

So for now, the Mexican does have some way to go before he can silence the doubters. However, if a performance against Charlo leads the fighter to secure other big fights, then that can only be a good thing moving forward.
