Yan Xiaonan meets Denise Gomes in UFC Shanghai co-main event
Former strawweight title challenger Yan Xiaonan will face top contender Denise Gomes in the co-main event at UFC Shanghai on Aug. 29.
The promotion announced the matchup Wednesday, per MMA Fighting. Yan, currently ranked No. 5 at 115 pounds, returns after a year away from the cage following a unanimous decision loss to Virna Jandiroba last April. Umar Nurmagomedov meets Song Yadong in the bantamweight headliner at Shanghai Indoor Stadium.
Yan looking to snap skid against surging Gomes
Yan's recent form stands at 3-4 over her past seven outings after opening her UFC run with six straight wins. That stretch includes a title fight loss to Zhang Weili, though the Chinese fighter holds victories over current champion Mackenzie Dern and former titleholder Jessica Andrade.
Gomes brings a four-fight winning streak into the co-main slot. The Brazilian most recently earned a unanimous decision over Tecia Pennington this past November and looks to crack the top five with a win over Yan.
The Shanghai card also features top flyweight prospect Rei Tsuruya against Kevin Borjas, who is coming off an upset win over previously undefeated Andre Lima.
