White Dismisses MVP-PFL Merger
Dana White is not losing sleep over the MVP-PFL merger.
The UFC CEO offered a reaction that landed somewhere between dismissal and mockery, delivered with the kind of confidence that comes from running the dominant organization in the sport for two decades.
"I don't know anything about what they're doing. When something isn't working for anybody, we should probably get together. Let's take two organizations that don't sell tickets and nobody watches and let's merge them together and make a bigger company that we won't sell tickets to and that nobody will watch,” White
White has never been interested in diplomatic responses to questions about competing promotions, and the MVP-PFL merger does not appear to have changed that approach. His argument is simple: combining two organizations that have not cracked the mainstream does not produce one that will.
PFL has operated for years without threatening the UFC's market position in any meaningful way. MVP's boxing events have generated attention but have not built the kind of sustained audience that challenges the major promotions. Paul's counter-argument — that the combined entity has the capital and infrastructure to grow differently than either could alone — is one White clearly does not find compelling.
"I don't look at any of those guys as our competition. We're in a whole other stratosphere now. I mean, I'm competing with all the majors. Those guys aren't my competition. So good luck to them all. I wish them all the best,” White
The majors he is referencing are the NFL, MLB, and NBA — American sports institutions with generational audiences, billion-dollar television deals, and cultural footprints that dwarf anything combat sports has historically reached for.
From that vantage point, the MVP-PFL combination is not even in the frame. Paul's pitch to fighters and fans is that an alternative to the UFC is being built with real resources and real ambition. White's response is that the UFC stopped worrying about alternatives a long time ago.
