WBO's 75-25 Split Gives Haney Full Control

The WBO's purse bid for Devin Haney versus Keyshawn Davis has been scheduled for July 27.

The sanctioning body has already fixed the purse split at 75-25 in Haney's favour. That figure does not change regardless of who wins the bidding rights or what the total purse ends up being. For a challenger like Davis, who has been positioned as a rising contender and legitimate future star at welterweight, the financial terms are a ceiling he cannot negotiate around — only accept or decline.

For Haney, the arrangement is close to ideal. He controls the WBO welterweight title, the split is locked in his favour, and the purse bid process itself does not generate the kind of financial pressure that might force him into a fight on unfavourable terms.

The Shakur Stevenson situation adds a layer of complexity to the timing. Stevenson has publicly pushed for Haney to fight Davis, saying recently that he does not believe his close friend would lose. The endorsement is genuine — but it also conveniently positions Davis as a stepping stone that keeps the Haney-Stevenson fight on hold for longer.

If Haney fulfils the WBO mandatory against Davis, a Stevenson matchup moves further down the calendar. That outcome serves neither Stevenson's commercial interests nor the fans who have been waiting for the biggest available fight at or near welterweight.

Haney's options branch in multiple directions from here. He holds the WBO welterweight title and has been in discussions with both Stevenson and the Davis mandatory simultaneously.

The purse bid creates a formal deadline that forces at least one of those conversations to a resolution, even if the resolution is vacating the belt and walking away from the mandatory obligation entirely.

Davis has positioned himself as one of welterweight's most compelling young fighters, a power puncher with elite amateur credentials and the Mayweather promotional backing that has historically produced well-managed career paths. A world title shot against Haney would be the biggest opportunity of his professional career. The 75-25 split against a fighter of Haney's stature is the cost of getting it.

What happens on July 27 will clarify which direction each party is actually willing to go. If the bid process produces a promoter and a framework, the mandatory gets made. If Haney's team decides the Stevenson fight or another alternative is more valuable than the WBO mandatory at these terms, the belt becomes available and the division reshuffles around whoever picks it up.
