Warren Confirms Fury Opponent Imminent
Frank Warren has confirmed that Tyson Fury's next opponent will be announced shortly, with a comeback fight pencilled in for August serving as the final preparation before a planned November showdown with Anthony Joshua.
The two-fight roadmap sets up what would be one of British boxing's most anticipated matchups for the end of the year.
"Keep watching this space. It will be a good opponent, it'll be good for him. He can't afford to slip up because 'AJ's' got his fight in a few weeks' time. He has got to come through that, Tyson has to come through this, and then the big one will be in November," Warren said
The framing of the August fight as one Fury cannot afford to slip up on is telling. Warren's language acknowledges the stakes without dressing them up — both fighters need to win their interim bouts before November, and a loss from either side collapses the plan entirely. Joshua has his own fight to navigate in the coming weeks, and Warren has made clear the November date is contingent on both men coming through their respective obligations cleanly.
The question hanging over Fury's side of that equation is the form he showed against Makhmudov on April 11. He won over twelve rounds, but the performance raised concerns rather than settling them. Fury looked slower, was easier to hit, and showed none of the explosive movement that defined his best performances against Deontay Wilder and in the first Usyk fight. Whether that represented a fighter still shaking off ring rust from his retirement period or something more permanent is a question the August fight will need to answer before November arrives.
Joshua, for his part, comes in at 29-4 with his own point to prove following two losses to Usyk that effectively ended his run as a unified champion. A fight between the two British heavyweights has been discussed, avoided, and renegotiated for the better part of a decade. November, if both men come through, is when it finally gets resolved.
