Vergil Ortiz Jr settles with Golden Boy, eyes Boots Ennis
Vergil Ortiz Jr has settled his dispute with Golden Boy Promotions and will remain with the company, clearing the path for a potential showdown with newly crowned two-belt champion Jaron Ennis.
Ortiz, whose planned bout with Ennis was derailed by the promotional conflict, told media in a statement that he is grateful the two sides reached an understanding. His focus now is getting the Ennis fight made and delivering big performances for fans, he said.
What Ennis win over Zayas means for Ortiz matchup
Ennis stopped Xander Zayas in seven rounds on June 27 to claim the WBA and WBO welterweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super welterweight titles, raising the stakes for any meeting with Ortiz. The unbeaten Philadelphia fighter is now 36-0 with 32 knockouts. Ortiz stands at 24-0 with 22 stoppages and last fought in November 2025, when he demolished Erickson Lubin in under two rounds.
With both men holding spotless records and the titles now in play, the fight carries more commercial weight than before the legal issues paused negotiations. Whether it lands before the end of 2026 remains to be seen, but the settlement removes the biggest obstacle.
