Valenzuela Wants Tank Davis – ‘Let’s Get It 0n Man'
Jose Valenzuela is targeting a fight with Gervonta Davis following his win over Chris Colbert.
The boxer came out victorious for the first time against Colbert following their rematch. The boxer dropped Colbert in the first round before dropping him with a right hook in the sixth. That ended the fight as Valenzuela got his revenge. The attention has now turned towards his next opponent.
Davis has not fought since he faced Ryan Garcia in April. The event sold over $1.2 million in PPVs, making it the highest-grossing event in 2023. As such, Davis has been linked with mega fights, particularly Devin Haney. Although that may be the case, Colbert was keen on getting his shot before the Valenzuela fight. This was particularly since he has a good relationship with Davis, having trained with him and his team.
Colbert On Tank Davis
"I want Gervonta Davis. Gervonta Davis is the best guy in the 135-pound division. Gervonta Davis is a tremendous fighter. Watching him motivated me. That’s a young black man that came from the trenches like me making millions. He can do whatever he wants and step the way he wanna step. He motivates me to keep going and work harder and be a better fighter. I like working around fighters like that,” Colbert said
Those comments have now been flipped since Valenzuela won.
Valenzuela Wants Davis
“As soon as I went home I went straight to work. I want to thank Chris, he’s a hell of a fighter. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here. It takes two to tango so I’m grateful for him. I want to say thank you [Chris] to you and your father. The bet is off, that’s childish. Have a good holiday, man.
"Everything happens for a reason. I got to thank God. I was patient for a reason,” he said. “But you know, I beat him twice now. This was a title eliminator and I want to fight for the title. So, Tank Davis let’s get it on man. Let’s give these people a great show … I think I’m ready. I put my heart and soul into this and I beat him twice now so I think I deserve it," Valenzuela stated
The chances of the fight happening are slim. There is increasing pressure on Davis to fight the most prominent names at 135, such as Shakur Stevenson and Vasiliy Lomachenko. At the same time, there are calls on Tank to move up to 140 to take on fighters such as Teofimo Lopez, Subriel Matias or Haney. But in the meantime, Tank will want to be active.
His last fight against Garcia was followed up by some jail time for violating the terms of his house arrest over a hit-and-run incident. Davis’ return is expected to be next year following PBC’ new deal with Amazon Prime Video. Tank is in the conversation to headline their first PPV. And Valenzuela could be the beneficiary of that.
