UFC White House predictions: Freedom 250 spectacle reshapes MMA
The UFC stages its White House card Sunday night, and the sport that once built around Chuck Liddell and Georges St-Pierre now sells the brand over its athletes. MMA Mania's Jesse Holland, covering combat sports since 2004, says the shift reflects a broader entertainment arms race where everything must be louder and more garish, from Usyk fighting at the Pyramids to Rome considering events in a refurbished Colosseum section.
UFC sold its broadcast rights to Paramount rather than continue the pay-per-view model, making marquee matchups financially out of reach for many fans and justifying unranked additions like Kyle Daukaus on a card billed as once-in-a-lifetime. The South Lawn setup has split the fanbase and drawn mainstream criticism, though even detractors acknowledge the production value. As Holland writes, the promotion wants you to notice the man behind the curtain this time, promoting walkout song bets and pop-up merch over fight narratives.
Topuria-Gaethje headlines lightweight unification bout
Lightweight champion Ilia Topuria brings a 17-0 record into his unification clash with interim titleholder Justin Gaethje, having knocked out Alex Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and Charles Oliveira in succession. Gaethje rebounded from prior knockout losses to Holloway, Eddie Alvarez, and Dustin Poirier with a five-round win over Paddy Pimblett in January. Holland notes Gaethje is a former NCAA Division I All-American who could exploit Topuria's size disadvantage with wrestling but likely will not. "He probably won't or he would have done it by now," Holland writes, predicting Topuria wins by knockout.
The co-main features Alex Pereira moving to heavyweight for the first time against Ciryl Gane for an interim title. Pereira looked vulnerable to takedowns against Israel Adesanya in their kickboxing days, while Gane has landed eight takedowns in the UFC and submitted Don'Tale Mayes with a heel hook. Holland expects Gane to control where the fight takes place and take a decision. Sean O'Malley meets Aiemann Zahabi on the main card, with the Canadian riding a seven-fight streak but having landed just one UFC takedown, leaving him few answers for O'Malley's power at bantamweight.
The card airs Sunday on Paramount Plus, with a press conference scheduled for later today addressing matchmaking that some consider a step down from expectations given the venue's historical significance.
