Topuria Suffers Fractured Orbital Bone

Ilia Topuria was taken to hospital following his stoppage loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250 and has since been confirmed to have suffered a fractured orbital bone.

"Ilia Topuria is doing well. He's taking some rest. Pending the results of the CT scan, Ilia does have a small orbital fracture, but there is NO need whatsoever for surgery. Rest time and that's it," his camp

The injury adds clinical context to what unfolded inside the Octagon on Sunday night. Topuria's right eye had been visibly damaged from early in the first round, and by his own account the deterioration was severe enough to affect his vision in both eyes before the fight was even halfway through.

"Justin, congratulations. You said you'd leave your mark on my face… and you did. You took the sight from my right eye in the first round, and by the end of the second, from my left too. No excuses.

“I had one of the best camps of my life. I came in sharp, prepared, and ready. Last night was your night. I'll heal. I'll rest. And I'll return stronger, wiser, and far more dangerous. This story between us is far from over. We will have our rematch,” Topuria

The orbital fracture makes the vision impairment he describes medically credible. Fighting through the kind of damage that progressively removes your ability to see your opponent is a different proposition from absorbing punishment with full awareness of what is coming.

What it does not change is the result. Gaethje is champion, Topuria is not, and the 17-0 record that had placed the Spaniard among the most dominant fighters of his generation now has a loss attached to it.

His statement makes clear he intends to return with both on his record and address the second one directly. Whether Gaethje, who hinted at retirement in his post-fight interview, is still around when that moment arrives is the outstanding question neither man can answer yet.
