Teofimo Lopez launches promotion after Stevenson loss
Teofimo Lopez is starting his own promotional company after getting outclassed by Shakur Stevenson earlier this year.
Lopez told Fight Hype after last week's press conference for his upcoming bout against Rolly Romero that the loss forced him to rethink his business approach. Bad Left Hook reports that the former lightweight champion announced Takeover Promotions, a venture with DAZN that gives him control over his career assets.
Lopez on protecting assets in prime years
"When you get outclassed like in my previous fight then there's things you got to really think about," Lopez said, per the outlet. "I need to also protect my assets. What does that mean? Got to start launching something different: Takeover Promotions with DAZN."
The 29-year-old added that he can work with lead promoters under the structure while retaining rights to his content. "These are my prime years," he said. "Let's take advantage of those prime years but in a good way where small steps but long gains afterwards."
Lopez challenges Romero for the WBA welterweight title next month in Las Vegas. He said the long-term goal is helping young fighters navigate the business side of the sport once his career winds down.
