Teixeira Vows To Take Rua's Head Off In Boxing Match

Glover Teixeira says his upcoming boxing match with Mauricio Rua will be a real fight, not a friendly exhibition.

The former UFC heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight champions meet Aug. 29 at Spaten Fight Night 3 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, under professional boxing rules with 10-ounce gloves over eight two-minute rounds. Teixeira, speaking to MMA Junkie, made clear he intends to go hard. "We're gonna go in there and do some boxing and let it out, man. It's a fight. We're training hard, no exhibition," he said. "We do 10-ounce gloves, and we're going to take his head off. I'm going to take his head off."

Two Legends Who Retired On The Same Card

Both fighters walked away from MMA at UFC 283 in early 2023. Teixeira, now 46, lost his 205-pound title to Jamahal Hill that night. Rua, 44, retired after a technical knockout loss to Ihor Potieria on the same card. According to the MMA Junkie report, Teixeira noted the timing: "I fought everybody, he fought everybody, we didn't fight each other and that's great. We retired the same day, here we are."

The event airs live on TV Globo and streams on Globoplay. The card also features Olympic judo gold medalists Rafaela Silva and Beatriz Souza in separate matches.
