Floyd Schofield’s team has officially called out Gervonta Davis for allegedly hiding behind his “Champion in Recess” status and ducking.

The dispute centers on the WBA’s decision in January 2026 to designate Davis as its “Champion in Recess” for the lightweight belt. This move was made after Tank’s legal challenges, which included allegations of battery, kidnapping, and false imprisonment. Despite Schofield sitting as the clear mandatory challenger, reports stress that Davis is instead negotiating a secondary rematch with Isaac Cruz. The Schofield camp has labeled this a “duck.”

The most damaging claim comes from Schofield Sr., Floyd’s father and head trainer, who suggests that Davis’ time away from the ring has resulted in his decline. Schofield Sr. alleged that Davis is currently walking around at 175 pounds.

The Schofield team is explicitly lobbying the WBA to deny Davis any “catchweight tune-up” bouts. They insist that if Davis returns, he must do so at 135 pounds against the mandatory challenger. Davis has been out of action since March 2025, when he fought to a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr.

“There is a reason why Tank said, ‘I will never get in the ring with that kid.’ There is a reason his coach got online and said Tank will never get in the ring with him. We want to suck him dry and fight him at 135, that is the best advantage that we have right now. If we let Tank get a tune-up, he would be on fire. He is about 175 pounds right now. He has got to come all the way back down to 135,” Schofield Sr. stated
