Suarez Reveals What Zhang Loss Taught Her
Tatiana Suarez says her first career loss taught her more about fighting smarter than any of her previous victories ever did.
The former title challenger, who dropped a decision to strawweight champion Zhang Weili in early 2025, has bounced back with consecutive wins over Amanda Lemos and Loopy Godinez. Speaking ahead of her clash with Virna Jandiroba this weekend, Suarez told MMA Junkie she took plenty from the Weili fight, particularly around mental toughness and fight IQ.
Suarez On Facing Adversity For First Time
The Zhang bout marked the first time Suarez weathered real adversity inside the cage. She absorbed hard shots but kept pressing forward, a fact she points to as proof she will never quit mid-fight. "She hit me with some good shots, and I just kept coming forward," Suarez said, per MMA Junkie.
But the bigger lesson was tactical. Suarez acknowledged that skill and ring intelligence matter more than grit alone when the stakes are highest. "Being a skilled fighter and having the fight IQ is important when you have big fights like that," she said. "So that's what I definitely learned out there as well is like being smarter and fighting smarter."
Suarez enters the Jandiroba matchup riding a two-fight streak and positioned for another run at the title picture.
